Constellation Piercings Are a Thing Now

Now your ears can look like the night sky!

We love piercings. We love them in our ears, in our noses, heck, even in our hair. Finally, we've passed the point of stigma, and having multiple piercings (or tattoos) is becoming seen and valued as a vehicle of self-expression.

Case in point: the latest piercing trend, constellation piercings— which are exactly as they sound, tiny clusters of delicate earrings that look like a design you might see in the sky. Of course, earring stacking is nothing new, but this particular take on it is getting a lot of attention in L.A. right now, as our friends over at Refinery29 pointed out. The man behind the sudden spike? Celebrity piercer Brian Keith Thompson, who has studded celebrities like Beyoncé and Scarlett Johansson at his parlor, Body Electric Studio). His Instagram is filled with gorgeous piercing combos that'll make you wonder why you only have one pair of earrings in your lobes right now.

Basically what Thompson does is pierce your ear in different ways depending on what look you're going for and the shape of your ear. Since everyone's ears look different—some people have bigger or smaller lobes and their cartilage might be shaped differently—he tailors each piercing to the individual client. He's not only able to add to the piercings you already have (perfect for so many of us who got our lobes pierced in middle school) but his constellation piercings can make old placements that might look a bit wonky—anything crooked or too low or high on the ear—into a new piece of art.

He likes to start with sets of three piercings and build from there. Once you have more than two, it really starts to look like a constellation.

"Right now, I am really into doing something big paired with something dainty—like a planet and a couple of moons," Thompson told Refinery29. We love the contrast of smaller and bigger pieces along with the hoops and the studs. And look at those spikes!

He says that five piercings is probably the most you should get done in one sitting because once you leave the studio, they require months of care and cleaning (plus it's important to go to a studio that's clean and trustworthy). It's better to let each piercing heal fully before going back for more to avoid infections. After they're healed, odds are you're going to want more.

For all of your jewelry needs, Thompson loves Body Vision LA, and we've personally got a penchant for the dainty studs and delicate hoops at Catbird. But if you're not quite ready to add more holes to your ears, there are some cute ear crawlers at Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters that mimic the look. They're so pretty it hurts.
