If you're trying to avoid any detailed spoilers at all for the upcoming Roseanne reboot on ABC, you'll want to look away now. One of the major revelations that comes early in the new nine-episode season is that Roseanne herself is a Trump supporter, which leaves the Conner family very divided politically.

"It hasn't been established that Dan voted for Trump - I don't think he voted," showrunner Bruce Helford told reporters at the Television Critics Association Press Tour this afternoon (January 8). "We wanted to find a way for this particular family, which represents a full cross-section of values and beliefs, to get that debate going in a very honest way."

Barr, who is an outspoken Trump supporter herself, explained that her character's leaning felt like a natural extension of what the show has always been. "I always tried to have [the show] be a true reflection of the society we live in," Barr said. "Half the people voted for Trump and half didn't, so it's just realistic. I've always tried to portray a realistic picture of American working class people, and it was working class people who elected Trump, so I felt that was very real."

Sara Gilbert, who plays Darlene, noted that the revival portrays the Conners as "a family that is divided by politics but still is filled with love."

It was revealed earlier this week that the new Roseanne season will feature a gender nonconforming character in Roseanne's grandson Mark, who wears clothes that are traditionally feminine, but does not identify as transgender, transitioning or gay.

Roseanne will return on March 27, 2018 with a special hour-long episode.
