A congresswoman responded to Melania Trump's "I Really Don't Care" jacket with an "I Care" sign, and we support this message

On Thursday, June 21st, First Lady Melania Trump visited a children’s shelter at the U.S.-Mexico border wearing a jacket with the words “I Really Don’t Care, Do U?” painted on the back. Since then, the jacket has been dominating the news cycle. Many people swiftly condemned Melania’s fashion choice, which was bafflingly tone-deaf at best and unfathomably inhumane at worst.

One congresswoman, Nevada representative Dina Titus, decided to fight back against Melania’s lack of compassion with a fashion choice of her own. Titus made a DIY version of the jacket with a much more positive message: She taped a piece of paper to her back that simply said, “I Care.”

“Hey #FLOTUS, try this on for size. #WhoWoreItBest #ICare,” Titus tweeted along with a picture of her wearing the DIY jacket.

Congresswoman, we definitely think that you wore it best.

This isn’t the first time Titus has expressed her disapproval of the “I Really Don’t Care, Do U?” jacket.

Or of the Trump administration’s response to it. After first learning of the First Lady’s choice of apparel, Titus tweeted a response to the White House’s claim that the jacket wasn’t supposed to be making some sort of statement.

Luckily, even if Melania doesn’t care, many people do.

Portland-based clothing company WildFang created a jacket that looks a lot like Melania’s but reads, “I Really Care, Don’t U?” They completely sold out within an hour. Luckily, they re-stocked, and the jackets are available once again. 100% of proceeds go to RAICES, an important non-profit that provides legal services to immigrants and refugees.

We applaud anyone who is working hard to put an end to this humanitarian crisis. We firmly believe that children should never be separated from their families and that immigrants and that refugees should be treated with dignity and respect.

At the end of the day, it’s important to stay vigilant. We hope that these families will be reunited soon and that this barbaric treatment of immigrants and refugees can quickly become a thing of the past.
