Conan Gray Reveals He Was Kicked Out of His Home Once His Music Went Viral as a Teen

Over the years, Conan Gray has remained true to himself through his stunning fashion sense and raw, emotional music. In 2020, his song "Heather" made waves on TikTok after fans related to its gut-wrenching lyrics, but he initially gained traction when he uploaded his song, "Idle Town," to his YouTube channel in 2017.
In his latest interview with UpRoxx, Conan revealed that he wrote the song as a goodbye to Georgetown, the small Texas town he spent his teen years in. According to the interview, Conan had "a tumultuous childhood" due to his parents' divorce, financial instability, and bullying. Most times, he was targeted because of his Japanese-American heritage while attending predominantly white schools.
"My life mission growing up was just to get out of Texas," Conan told the outlet before repeating the mantra he would tell himself throughout high school: "I just need to get out. I need to be safe. I need to go to college and get a good job."
A week after he uploaded "Idle Town" to his nearly 100,000 YouTube subscribers in March 2017, Conan moved in with his best friends after he was kicked out of his home. He didn't reveal the reason he was kicked out, but he told UpRoxx that he found solace in his high school group of friends, who he refers to as his family and his home. "I'm not the kind of person who has a ton of friends, I just have a few that I really, really love and I very much value as family to me," he said. "My friends are everything. They're my entire life. I will go to the ends of the earth to see them for one day."
Aspects of his personal life have been detailed in tracks like Kid Krow's "The Story" and Superache's "Family Line," which he took two years to write. "Family Line" details flawed traits that Conan has inhabited from his upbringing, like lying and his fear of commitment and instability.
"To me, my main objective was to let people know that they aren't alone in feeling like they can't move past their lives or the things that have happened to them, but also letting them know that you can eventually," he said of the song. "It's going to take time and it's going to be painful, but it can happen."
