The Weeknd is undoubtedly one of the biggest singers of today, with multi-platinum albums, countless awards, and even his own Super Bowl halftime show. With that type of outrageous celebrity status, there’s bound to be questions, gossip, and rumors about a person’s love life—and The Weeknd is no stranger to enduring the public eye.
His relationship history, however, may surprise you. Namely, it's pretty tame compared to what you may expect from a man who once bragged to Rolling Stone about having “a lot of sex.”
The Weeknd may spend his time crooning about love, breakups and heartache, but he tends to be pretty private about his love life. The Weeknd has been in two serious public relationships with women that match his star power.
Most notable is his on-again, off-again relationship with model Bella Hadid. The Canadian singer dated Hadid for several years, with their love affair first beginning in April 2015. The pair met when The Weekend asked the model to post for the cover of his album Beauty Behind the Madness. She declined, but agreed to meet up with him anyway—and they hit it off.
“It just kind of fell into my lap,” he told Rolling Stone of his relationship with Hadid in Oct. 2015.
The pair were a celebrity power couple until Nov. 2016, when People broke the news of their breakup. But the two remained friends, sharing an adorable (and viral) moment on the Victoria Secret runway in December 2016.
Soon after, however, things reportedly turned sour. In January 2017, The Weeknd was spotted kissing Selena Gomez in California—leading to some social media drama between the three stars. At the time, insiders told People that Hadid was "hurt" at how quickly The Weeknd moved on from their romance.
In an interview with Teen Vogue with February 2017, Hadid said, "I'll always respect [The Weeknd], and I'll always love him. Sometimes you want to be sad about it or handle it differently, but at the end of the day, you never want to burn a bridge that you've fought so hard to build."
As for The Weeknd's relationship with Gomez, the whirlwind romance was marked by red carpet appearances, PDA, and tabloid rumors galore. But eventually, in October 2017, The Weeknd and Gomez broke up after about 10 months of dating. An insider told People that scheduling was to blame for the separation. But Gomez was also infamously linked to her on-again, off-again ex Justin Bieber around the same time—and some of The Weeknd’s lyrics hint at Gomez leaving him for Bieber.
Soon after his split with Gomez (two weeks after, to be exact), The Weeknd was spotted leaving Hadid’s New York City apartment in November 2017. The pair reportedly dated in private for months, and were finally spotted together (while locking lips) at Coachella in April 2018. The couple were officially back on in July 2018, according to an E! report at the time. What followed was a year of red carpet appearances, couple-y Instagram photos, and plenty of PDA. Yet, in August 2019, it was reported the couple split again. Though the pair reportedly “reconciled” in October 2019, they didn’t get back together. Since the couple’s August 2019 split, rumors have swirled time and time again that they are indeed back together—but nothing has been confirmed.
In late 2020, gossip sites linked The Weeknd to Spanish singer Rosalía after the pair were “very flirty” in the music video for a remix to the song “Blinding Lights.” The two haven’t been seen together publicly, leading this “relationship” to likely be speculation only.
But the rumors did lead a source to tell Hollywood Life in December 2020 that Bella Hadid was “not really concerned one way or another” about The Weeknd’s love life, adding that Hadid “knows the name of the game and understands…there will always be fan speculation regardless of who he works with.” But regardless, the source says “Bella is focused on her own life, and doesn't spend her time prying into his." What a way to be.
