Miley Cyrus' Lyrics to "Midnight Sky" Explain Why She and Liam Broke Up

After ten years of breakups, makeups, and tons of drama, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are FINALLY married! But, how did they get to this point? And how did a relationship that started on the set of a romantic movie turn into a literal real-life fairytale? Here's a complete timeline of Miley and Liam's relationship that's going to leave you believing in love again.

August 13, 2020:

On an episode of the Barstool Sports podcast "Call Her Daddy," Miley revealed that Liam was the first person she ever had sex with. In a preview of the interview posted on Instagram, Miley says, “I didn’t go all the way with a dude until I was 16, but I ended up marrying the guy.”

Miley also released her first song of 2020 titled, "Midnight Sky" on August 13 which seems to speak of her desire to break free from the relationship and be her own person. Lyrics like, "Lotta years went by with my hands tied up in your ropes" give off the feeling that Miley was tied up in the relationship. Then the chorus starts with, "I was born to run, I don't belong to anyone, oh no / I don't need to be loved by you," which speak of her desire to break free of the relationship and be her own person.

May 6, 2019:

Miley Cyrus has had a lot of hits, but none were as popular as her 2009 banger, "Party in the USA." And while Miley might be tired of the tune 10 years later, Liam will never let her forget it.

"I hate it, but for some reason, the people love it," Miley said in a video, before Liam started breaking out in the song, screaming "Yeah yeah yeah," and scaring his wife in the process.

Later, Liam recorded as the teasing continued. While walking down a rainy plane tarmac, Liam continued to scream the chorus to the song, getting Miley's attention between lines by yelling "Hey Miley, hey Miley!"

Liam genuinely seems to be having a great time, poking fun at his wife, and Miley takes it all in stride.

Seriously, can I please become best friends with them already??

April 25, 2019:

Miley and Liam made quite a splash during the Avengers: Endgame premiere a couple of days before, but Miley had a lot to say AFTER the big event about her husband.

After sharing a photo of Liam on her Instagram stories, Miley added, "I'm literally freakishly obsessed with my husband right now....like always has been always will be, but RN it's EXTRA compulsive."

Miley also hared a video of her licking (yes, licking) Liam on the Avengers: Endgame purple carpet, "When he looks good enough to eat! #Snack #SugarDaddy."

If they weren't #CoupleGoals before, they definitely are now!

March 18, 2019:

Introducing your boyfriend to your family is always tough and older brothers are some of the toughest to please. Even Miley Cyrus had a small struggle when she introduced Liam Hemsworth to her family and her brother Trace tried to be tough on him, but it didn't last long.

"I love him," he told Us Weekly. "I mean, any time you have some guy dating your sister, you want to be the big brother — the bully — and hate on him, but he such a great guy. I love him. He’s awesome."

Looks like he fits in quite well!

February 21, 2019:

In her gorge cover interview in the March issue of Vanity Fair, Miley shared why she and Liam decided to get married, even though it was "out of character" for her. The singer revealed that her relationship with Liam was forever changed after their home was destroyed in the Malibu wildfires. In her personal memo published in VF, she wrote that after they lost their home, they "found a new bond underneath all that rubble."

She even admits that grieving their loss was what pushed the love birds to marriage. "What Liam and I went through together changed us," she wrote. "I’m not sure without losing Malibu, we would’ve been ready to take this step or ever even gotten married, who can say? But the timing felt right and I go with my heart."

Miley also added that marriage didn't change her sexuality in any way, as a large part of her identity is being queer. In fact, she shared that she believes relationship and partnership have nothing to do with sexuality or gender.

"We’re redefining, to be f*cking frank, what it looks like for someone that’s a queer person like myself to be in a hetero relationship," she told VF. "What I preach is: People fall in love with people, not gender, not looks, not whatever. What I’m in love with exists on almost a spiritual level. It has nothing to do with sexuality."

February 14, 2019:

Miley Cyrus has never been known for her subtlety, so why should her Valentine's Day post for her hubby be any different? The singer took to Twitter to share a sneak peek of her plans for her first Valentine's Day as husband and wife with Liam Hemsworth.

Yeah, we're going to go out on a limb here and say Liam is probbbbb going to be getting lucky this holiday. Of course, that is if he is feeling better. The actor was recently in the hospital for kidney stones, but hopefully he has since recovered and is ready to spend some quality time with his wife.

February 11, 2019:

Miley just walked down the red carpet ALONE, but it's not for the reason that you think. She actually went to the premiere of Liam's new movie solo after his recent hospitalization. Of course, Miley posted a super sweet message to her new husband on social media about his absence.

"So proud of my hunky hubby @liamhemsworth & his newest movie #IsntItRomantic ❤️ He unfortunately wasn’t able to attend due to health reasons... but he is recovering and taking this time to rest / heal. It’s hard for entertainers to put themselves before the project but this time it was crucial .... I am proud to represent him and his incredible work," she wrote. "So happy to see him shining in this comedy! He is the funniest person I know , and the world now gets to see the Liam I wake up to every day.... luckiest 💋"

She also had a bit of fun with several other posts, including one where she posed with his poster.

"Getting sick blows. But so do I. Get well soon babe. I love you. Play that sax you sexy f*ck. ❤️💋❤️💋❤️💋❤️💋❤️💋❤️"

Liam also didn't get to join his new wife at the 2019 Grammy Awards and many fans were wondering why he didn't appear, especially since she was set to perform. According to US Weekly, he recently suffered from kidney stones and is currently recovering.

January 28, 2019:

Miley and Liam had their first public event as newlyweds, attending the G'Day USA Gala in LA where Liam received the excellence in film award. Before the event, Liam talked to Extra about the couple's Christmas wedding and he explained that it was very last minute.

"It wasn’t hard [putting together the wedding]—we have a small group of friends," he said. "It was mainly immediate family, a spur-of-the-moment kind of thing. I am very happy to be where I am."

Liam went on to explain that things haven't changed much since the wedding and are "the same but different," since the two have been together "for the better part of 10 years."

Later, when Liam was excepting his award on stage, he took a minute to thank Miley for her support. "Thank you to my beautiful wife," he said. "You are a sweet, sweet angel. You're great."

In a video that Miley posted to Twitter, you can see her jokingly motioning that she wants more compliments, but it's safe to say that she seems pretty flattered by what she received.

December 23, 2018

After 10 years together, Miley and Liam finally tied the knot in a very secretive ceremony. Photos emerged on Instagram of the couple cutting a tiered cake, with Liam in a tux and Miley in a white, off-the-shoulder dress. "Mr." and "Mrs." balloons could be seen in the pics, but other than that, the scene looked super casual, with Miley's mom even wearing jeans.

Three days later, however, Miley confirmed that the couple did, in fact, get married, tying the knot in a simple ceremony at their home in Tennessee.

According to Entertainment Tonight, the event came together in a matter of days. "The gathering was small and intimate and rather spontaneous,” a source told ET. "They did some quick pre-planning before the holiday and decided that they didn’t want a big elaborate wedding. They truly wanted to keep it a secret.”

Apparently the original plan was to get married in Malibu over the holidays, according to People, but that was derailed after the terrible wildfires last month. "After their Malibu house didn’t make the fire, they have been living at Miley’s Tennessee house," which is where the event was held.

Still, the couple seemed to have a great wedding, and will, no doubt, have an amazing life together!

December 12, 2018

Miley goes on the Howard Stern show and discusses the fires, saying Liam saved their four horses, two pigs, seven dogs, and three cats from the fire. "Liam, I've never loved him more for this," she said. "He was so incredible. He got all the animals out in his truck. He put two pigs in crates, which I tell you is so hard." Don't worry, though, Liam was repaid for all of his hard work. "He got a lot of action for saving the animals," Miley told Howard Stern. "We had to make sure he know I was very very grateful." The couple later gave $500,000 to the relief effort.

November 2018

Liam and Miley's Malibu home is destroyed in the California wildfires. Liam shares a heartbreaking photo on his Instagram featuring the remains of their house, including a sign that reads "LOVE."

July 2018

Out of nowhere, Miley deletes every photo off her Instagram, sparking rumors that the couple has split. Those rumors are squashed, however, after Liam posts a video of the two on social media.

May 3, 2017

Miley tells Billboard that her new song "Malibu" is about Liam and the desire to reclaim the narrative surrounding their relationship. "They’re going to talk about me if I come out of a restaurant with Liam," she explained. "So why not put the power back in my relationship and say, 'This is how I feel'?"

October 27, 2016

Miley confirms her re-engagement on Ellen. "Young people in general, what we wear and what a relationship and a commitment means is very different to what tabloids like to make it mean," she explained. "I think young people have a different idea of partnering and not feeling that this necessarily means this is going to have a legal document signed and dated because it's really sharing a life with someone and not about a legal paper that tells me anything."

Miley gets a new tattoo, which is reportedly in honor of Liam. Her new ink features a mini Vegemite jar on her arm, which is one of her fiance's favorite food.

Miley and Liam are seen together for the first time in months, this time in Australia.

Shortly after it seems like Miley is back to wearing her engagement ring and People announces that their engagement is, in fact, back on.

August 8, 2015

Miley tells Elle UK that she is single and dating. In the same interview, she also comes out as pansexual. "But I'm not in a relationship," she said. "I'm 22, I'm going on dates, but I change my style every two weeks, let alone who I'm with."

April 2015

Miley and Patrick break up after he is seen with another girl while on spring break, though he denies cheating.

November 2014

Miley starts dating Arnold Schwarzenegger's son, Patrick.

October 2013

A month after the breakup, Miley claims she's doing better than ever, telling Cosmo, "This is the best time of my life. I'm not going to look back on it and be like, 'I wish I hadn't been dwelling over a breakup,' you know? Because that's not what God wants my life to be about right now."

September 2013

Miley unfollows Liam on Twitter and the engagement is called off. Just a day later, Liam is seen kissing model Eiza Gonzalez. A few days after that, Miley performs "Wrecking Ball," a song supposedly about Liam, at the iHeartRadio Music Festival, and breaks down in tears during the performance.

Other songs on Miley's new album, Bangerz, are also reportedly about Liam, namely "FU," which is about a guy who wasn't faithful to Miley.

"It seemed like everything was going fine then I accidentally saw a few things in your cell/ I don't really have much to say/I was over it the second that I saw her name/I got two letters for you/One of them is F and the other is U because what you gotta do is get yourself a clue."

August 26, 2013

Miley makes headlines everywhere after her performance at the VMAs, which is filled with twerking, grinding, and foam fingers.

May 2013:

Everyone assumes that Miley's new track "Wrecking Ball" is about Liam and those rumors are confirmed at a performance in London, when she preempts the song with a short speech.

So, yeah, I guess that mystery is solved.

April 2013

It's time for dad to get involved. Billy Ray Cyrus tells Nightline that he's not sure what's going to happen with Liam and Miley. "They're young, they're kids," he says. "The great news is they're great friends. And if you end up getting married, that's your business too, you know?"

March 2013

Miley is seen without her wedding ring, which makes many believe the engagement is off. She tweets about her frustrations, announcing a break from social media.

Despite the break, two weeks later she's posting on Twitter again and the ring is back on.

February 2013

Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton accuses Miley of cheating on Liam with Ed Westwick, which Miley denies.

Around the same time, however, the couple attends separate Oscar after parties and rumors begin to circulate that the pair has broken up.

November 2012

Miley goes on Ellen and discusses her hopes for her wedding. "It has to be perfect," she says. "It has to be like a soundtrack in a movie. That's the one day where that movie crap is real. That romance."

Though Miley denied rumors she was engaged just two months earlier, in June she tells People, "I’m so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam."

She shows off the ring again at another event with her beau.

The two seem to be going strong for about a year as they attend multiple events together, including the Oscars and the premiere for Liam's movie, The Hunger Games. Shortly after, Miley is seen rocking a large rock on her ring finger, beginning a wave of rumors regarding the couple's engagement.

Miley quickly shuts down the rumors, saying the ring is topaz, not diamond.

March 2011

Seriously, these two are more on-and-off than Ross and Rachel. In March 2011, shortly after Miley Cyrus was seen kissing actor Josh Bowman while the two filmed So Undercover, Miley and Liam are seen together yet again! This time, they're apparently "taking it slow and just enjoying each other's company."

November 2010

The drama continues...just two months after Miley and Liam get back together, they split up, again! This time, a source tells E! News it's "just a time out" while he is in Australia and she's on tour.

September 2010

Just one month after their breakup, the couple is seen running errands together in LA, suggesting the two are back together.

August 2010

After a few months together, Miley and Liam break up. According to E! News, the relationship ended because of Miley's busy work schedule.

"Miley has been super focused on her work," a source told the site. "Liam wanted more, but she's 17 and has other priorities right now. He's been a distraction."

E! also reported that the break up could have been due to some infidelity on Liam's part. According to the site, Liam was seen making out with another girl in early August shortly before the two broke up. Though, this also could have occurred during a break in their relationship, so don't be too quick to blame Liam. Miley was filming LOL in Detroit at the time, so it's possible the two took a breather instead of doing long distance.

June 2009

The pair met while filming the Nicholas Sparks movie, The Last Song. The movie focuses on a young couple during one emotional summer and it was Liam's first major role, as well as Miley's first big role outside of the Hannah Montana franchise. After a photo surfaced of the two kissing on set, rumors of their romance started circulating.
