And with that… Never Say Never. Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin may have officially married a year ago in an impromptu elopement, but they’re now sharing their love story with loved ones. The young couple’s relationship-turned-marriage took many years to develop, as evidenced by their relationship timeline, which was, at times, tumultuous. Here, The Knot outlines their relationship timeline and more.

2009: Eenie Meenie

Hailey’s father Stephen Baldwin was responsible for introducing the pop sensation to his daughter, as evidenced within video footage from nearly a decade ago. In the adorable clip, a young Bieber, whose breakout EP My World was released that same year, extends his hand to greet a rather shy Hailey at his event.

2011: Never Say Never

At age 14, Hailey Baldwin had fully developed a crush on the pop sensation to the degree that she had her dad accompany her to the red carpet premiere of Bieber’s smash biopic, Never Say Never.

November 2014: A New Crew

In late 2014, Bieber and Baldwin’s worlds collided once again when they were photographed attending Hillsong United—a megachurch with locations across New York City, Miami, Los Angeles and Sydney—with some of their celebrity pals like Kendall Jenner.

December 2014: Just Friends

Speculation about Bieber and Baldwin’s burgeoning romance was reported by multiple outlets. The pop superstar, however, felt compelled to address the chatter in an Instagram post that featured a photo of the two pals hanging out in a car.

“People are crazy,” Bieber expressed at the time. “I’m super single and this is my good friend u would know otherwise.”

New Year’s Eve 2015

The friends spent the holiday together with a group in Anguilla, and were rather flirtatious during the trip fueling more speculation that they were together.

2015: Friendship Turned Feelings?

Both Baldwin and Bieber maintained a flirtatious friendship throughout the year until the “more than friends” status was raised that summer following the release of some paparazzi photos. A photographer captured the two cozying up to each other while poolside in Miami.

Bieber resolutely maintained, however, that he was single. Months later, they were again photographed together in L.A.

January 2016: The Kiss That Launched a Thousand Likes

It was a whirlwind time period for both Bieber and Baldwin, whose friendship once again turned romantic during this season. Bieber caused a flurry of internet activity when he posted a photo of himself kissing Baldwin during a night of partying.

February 2016: Friends With Benefits

Bieber eventually tackled the rumors directly and, in an ominous statement, even speculated whether Baldwin would someday be his wife.

“I don’t want to feel like the girl I love is an added responsibility,” he told GQ. “I know that in the past I’ve hurt people and said things that I didn’t mean to make them happy in the moment. So now I’m just more so looking at the future, making sure I’m not damaging them. What if Hailey ends up being the girl I’m gonna marry, right? If I rush into anything, if I damage her, then it’s always gonna be damaged.”

Around that same time, Baldwin also supported her friend and addressed the relationship buzz at the 2016 amFAR New York Gala. “We are not an exclusive couple,” she told E! News. “He’s about to go on tour… Relationships at this age are already complicated, but I don’t really like to talk about it because it’s between me and him.”

2017: Cooling It

The two maintained a civil friendship this year occasionally being spotted at church.

June 2018: They’re Dating

Multiple outlets reported that Baldwin and Bieber were seeing each other again after his last and final split from on-again, off-again flame Selena Gomez that spring.

The summer, whoever, took a positive and very public turn for the old pals. They were spotted cozying up to each other in Brooklyn, enjoying dates across New York City, and even taking a trip out to the Hamptons making spectators wonder whether Bieber was finally turning serious with Baldwin.

Two days before their engagement, the two were spotted holding hands in NYC after grabbing a meal at Nobu.

July 7, 2018: They’re Engaged

They’re engaged! Bieber proposed to Baldwin during a romantic trip to the Bahamas, where he popped the question with a large oval-cut diamond.

“It’s kind of a surprise, but kind of not,” a source later told People of the engagement. “Justin has been extremely happy these past few weeks. He has known Hailey for a long time. This might seem sudden, but they know each other very well.”

July 8-9, 2018: Bieber Declares His Love

The world knows they’re engaged. A day later, TMZ reported that the two were, in fact, engaged causing a frenzy everywhere. Bieber subsequently took to Instagram to confirm his whirlwind engagement to Baldwin.

“Was gonna wait a while to say anything but word travels fast, listen plain and simple Hailey I am soooo in love with everything about you!” he wrote at the time. “So committed to spending my life getting to know every single part of you loving you patiently and kindLY.”

August 2018: The Engagement

September 13, 2018: They’re Married

They’re married! The couple made it official on Thursday, September 13, during a visit to the Manhattan borough marriage courthouse for what many thought was simply an opportunity for the pair to pick up their marriage license.

“They went ahead and did it without listening to anyone,” a source told People, which broke the news a day later.

Earlier that morning, Baldwin attended a beauty event where she opened up about her pending wedding ceremony. (Nobody guessed what she was actually planning hours later.)

After making it official, newlyweds Bieber and Baldwin will still likely have a formal wedding ceremony down the line. “I just picture lights strung everywhere,” she told The Cut of her future nuptials. “I think having it in the woods would be so beautiful.”

September 25, 2019: Baldwin’s Bachelorette Bash

After a year of speculation, the couple decided to have a second wedding to celebrate their love. Before the nuptials, Baldwin’s close friend Kendall Jenner threw Baldwin a bachelorette party. Baldwin stunned a white slinky dress and short veil. The bride-to-be and her crew enjoyed a night out in Los Angeles with classic bachelorette party favors, like bedazzled cups.

September 2019: The Couple Welcomes Their Second Wedding Weekend

Bieber and Baldwin will marry in a formal wedding ceremony at the Montage Palmetto Bluff in South Carolina to round out their marriage a year later. September 29, 2019: The To-Be-Weds Enjoy Their Rehearsal Dinner

The night before their highly-anticipated ceremony, the couple hosted a luxe rehearsal dinner at the Montage Palmetto Bluff. Guests arrived to the estate by boat around sunset, a source told E! News. The source added that the guests (close friends and family only) were greeted with a glass of champagne before enjoying dinner outside on the water.
