Community Foundation: Please join us during Global Volunteer Month

“We can find meaning and reward by serving some higher purpose than ourselves, a shining purpose, the illumination of a Thousand Points of Light. … We all have something to give. " ~ President George H.W. Bush, Founder of Points of Light

Please join us in celebrating Global Volunteer Month and National Volunteer Week from April 21-27. This celebration is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out ways to be involved in our community.

It’s about volunteers and volunteering! It’s about working together to meet challenges and accomplish goals in our community. And it’s about taking action and encouraging individuals and our community to be at the center of social change, discovering and actively demonstrating our collective power to make a difference. You make a difference.

National Volunteer Week, a program of the Points of Light Foundation, was established in 1974 and has grown each year, with thousands of volunteer projects and special events scheduled across America. It is an opportunity to recognize and thank volunteers who lend their time, talents, and support to charitable causes, in their community and neighbors.

Volunteer Lenawee, a program of the Lenawee Community Foundation, is encouraging every Lenawee County resident to celebrate volunteers and their accomplishments during National Volunteer Week by saying thank you to the volunteers around you — at your school, your church, a local nonprofit, the hospital, your neighborhood, or wherever else you see someone helping. Your message can be simple, but powerful. Thank you for being who you are. Thank you for building a better community. Thank you for making a difference. Thank you for volunteering.

April is not only our time to celebrate our volunteers, but also to empower our community to share ideas, practices, and stories, and to shape a movement to re-imagine citizenship. You make our community better.

Local agencies need you. While volunteering is different for each person, everyone can help. City of Refuge Ministries International needs help with their meal assistance program. Adrian Community Preschool could use some help with a spring cleaning of the play area. The Daily Bread could use your help with serving community meals. Share the Warmth needs help at the shelter. Adrian Rea Literacy Center would love to have you volunteer as a tutor. Ask yourself, what can I do to help? How can I help my neighbor?

“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek. " ~ President Barack Obama.

You are the one we have been waiting for. Thank you for volunteering!
