The flick was originally slated for a theatrical release from Paramount, but the studio sold the film to Amazon Studios in the fall in a whopping $125 million deal, Deadline reported. The original Coming to America is available on Prime to buy or rent to hold fans over in the meantime.

Akeem is on the search for his son.

As the trailer (above) reveals, the now King Akeem has to eventually pass his role on to a male heir, per Zamunda's antiquated laws. Although he and his wife, Queen Lisa (Headley), have three daughters, his father, King Jaffe Joffer (Jones), reveals that Akeem does have a son. He just has to go back to America to find him.

"Without me giving away too much, there's trouble on the horizon with a neighboring country because of something Akeem did or did not do in the first movie," director Craig Brewer told Entertainment Weekly. "And he finds out that he has a son in America that he did not know he had."

He added, "Prince Akeem now needs to be a king and have children of his own and find out how to rule his kingdom with these old laws. He's got some problems he's got to figure out and he's got a little bit more depth in this particular one."

Many original stars are returning.

Murphy is King Akeem, and Hall is back as his trusted right hand, Semmi. Other returning stars from the '80s hit include James Earl Jones (King Jaffe Joffer), Shari Headley (Queen Lisa), John Amos (Cleo McDowell), and Louie Anderson (Maurice), according to Amazon's official announcement, per IndieWire.

Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, Jermaine Fowler, Bella Murphy, Rotimi, KiKi Layne, Nomzamo Mbatha, and Teyana Taylor join them in the cast. Murphy and Hall also take on multiple roles, thanks to some convincing prosthetics, including the original film's famous barbershop crew.

With Coming 2 America, Murphy reunites with Brewer, who directed his 2019 film, Dolemite Is My Name. David Sheffield and Barry W. Blaustein, who wrote the 1988 Coming to America screenplay, penned the new script with Black-ish's Kenya Barris.
