Actor and model Colton Haynes, who stars on the CW’s Arrow, revealed his history with anxiety in a series of tweets late Tuesday night. "For those of you who are suffering with intense anxiety…ur not alone. It’s been a constant struggle for me since 5th grade. It’s a battle,” he wrote.

Hayes joined Kylie Jenner and other celebrities who’ve spoke openly about dealing with anxiety. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older —18% of the population, according to the NIMH. Anxiety can be difficult to explain and understand, and has been described by those suffering from it as debilitating. In a haunting photograph, an Australian photographer took his own internal experience with anxiety — and turned it inside out.
Have loved ones with anxiety? “It’s important for friends and family to know when a person is experiencing anxiety so they can encourage the individual to face their fears,” Amy Przeworski, PhD, an assistant professor of psychological sciences at Case Western Reserve University, told Yahoo Health. “Receiving support and encouraging words from family and friends may help to empower a person who is struggling to face their fears.”
