Colorado Ski Resort Racks Up More Than Two Feet Of Snow During Christmas Weekend Blizzard

This just in: Santa clearly picked favorites this holiday season.

Yesterday, Steamboat Resort, Colorado, reported that it received over two feet of snow on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Steamboat's three-day snowfall total is currently sitting at an impressive 28 inches. Today, the resort's snow report called current conditions "packed powder," but I can only imagine there are still plenty of pockets of fresh stuff to be found.

With 117 inches thus far this season, Steamboat's nearly open wall to wall, offering 161 of its 181 trails—not half bad for a season that's been a mixed bag throughout the Rockies.

I'll take a mixed bag over the more dire alternative, though. Here in Washington, where I'm camped out for the holidays, the local ski hills are hurting. While I had a lovely day bush jumping at The Summit with old friends this past weekend, more snow would be much appreciated. The story's similarly unfortunate in Western Montana—my current home—where my local is struggling to open in the face of dry and warm conditions.

But that, of course, is part of the deal when you sign up to be a skier. Steamboat, with its fresh powdery coating and brand new Wild Blue Gondola, is sitting at the top of the food chain. Perhaps the New Year will distribute snow to those ski resorts in need. I can only hope—things are getting weird for us skiers locked in the freeze-thaw cycle.
