Colorado Ski Resort Opens 100% Of Terrain For Fourth Time In History

Crested Butte, CO, home of Matchstick Productions, made a terrain update to Instagram a day ago, writing, "Well folks, Patrol dropped the ropes (on Sunday) on Teo 2 this afternoon meaning we are officially open WALL TO WALL!!"

"An amazing feat and the skiing & riding is so much fun. Thank you to all of our Mountain Ops and Patrol teams for their continued hard work, we are all so thankful!"

Officials at Crested Butte explain that "this is the second season in a row that we have been able to open Teo 2 to the public, and just the fourth season in resort history."

Crested Butte opened in 1960, so it has been operating for over 60 years. This year, the mountain has received 176 inches of snow.

Tara Schoedginer, vice president and general manager at CBMR, reported that "it is awesome to see our guests enjoying the skiing and riding in Teo 2 for the second year in a row. I’m incredibly grateful to patrol and all of our teams for their hard work and dedication all season long to get us to this point."

Teo 2 can be accessed via the High Lift T-bar, and it requires skiers and riders to earn their turns: it is about a 20-to-30-minute hike to get back to the road to Paradise Bowl.

"Getting the mountain open Wall-to-Wall is one of the most important and exciting goals for the Crested Butte Ski Patrol every season," said Adam Caira, senior manager of Crested Butte Ski Patrol. "We are thrilled to be able to open Teocalli II again this year for the second year in a row, and for only the fourth season in the history of CBMR! The Teocalli bowls are some very unique terrain; I hope you get the opportunity to get out and enjoy it!"

The YouTube account Colorado Camera recorded the third time Teo II opened, below.

The last time Teo 2 opened, Crested Butte officials sat down with CBMR’s director of snow safety, John Mortimer, and assistant snow safety supervisor, Krista Hildebrandt, to understand more about what is required for this extreme terrain to open.

Krista said, "It’s a combination of snow conditions, the ability to put an egress road in, support from our great management team to get 100% open, and the resources and people power to make it all come together."

John elaborated that "to open any terrain area, we have to ensure that guests and patrol can access, ski or snowboard, and exit the area safely. It takes at least 55 inches of settled snow on the upper mountain stake before we can put in the egress road from Teo 2."

It's such a blessing the egress road was put in this season! Now, you just have to get your backpacks ready for the hike... don't forget your water or your Snickers bars!
