Colorado Ski Area Hopes To Start Snowmaking In 4 Days

Folks, winter is officially right around the corner.

Loveland Ski Area, Colorado, could start snowmaking in as little as four days.

Earlier this month, on September 20th, Loveland shared that they planned to start snowmaking on October 1st, four days from today.

Keep in mind that the classic "weather and conditions permitting" ski area caveat applies here, as always.

So what of the temperatures at Loveland this coming week? On Sunday, October 1st -- the first proposed day of snowmaking -- Loveland's temperatures will drop towards 32 degrees Fahrenheit in the evening, which, depending on the moisture content of the air, could be cold enough for snowmaking.

Moisture content? Yep. Moisture content. Snowmaking doesn't hinge on standard temperature readings.

Instead, would-be snowmakers utilize "wet bulb" temperature readings to decide if it's cold enough to blow snow—wet bulb temperatures factor in air temperature and moisture content. Generally, dry air bodes well for snowmaking if the air temperature is near freezing like it will be at Loveland this early October.

Loveland's ambitious snowmaking goals, therefore, depend on what Mother Nature plans to do over the next few days. Based on the current forecast, it could be a tight squeeze, but we still have several days for the meteorological scales to tip in Loveland's favor.

Think snow! And think cold (and dry) temperatures!
