Showroom spotlight

For Colony founder Jean Lin, the mission driving her co-op of independent furniture, lighting and textile artists is all about exploring new frontiers. Now, the gallery’s new Tribeca space is doing just that.

After inhabiting a second-floor SoHo loft since Colony’s inception a decade ago, Lin decided to relocate the collective while maintaining aesthetic continuity. “I wanted it to feel like a true evolution of the older space,” she tells Business of Home.

“We have really high ceilings that feel very airy and open, and then our frontage is all window and glass,” she says. The landlord was originally planning to drop the ceiling to hide all the exposed piping and beams, but Lin instead opted to maintain all the raw characteristics of the ground-floor trapezoidal space—exposed brick, white-painted beams and polished concrete floors. “I didn’t want to turn the space into a perfect box. It’s kind of an oddly shaped space. We really wanted to use all of those details to our advantage, versus trying to cover them all up.”

Transitioning from the second floor to the first floor also meant considering how displays could be viewed from the sidewalk. “It’s really not my favorite when I walk by a store and you just see everything—it looks so chaotic,” says Lin. Instead, she worked with one of her represented artists, textile designer Hiroko Takeda, to craft a custom panel system that allows her to control which collections are on view depending on which draperies are open or closed. The piece was fabricated and installed by local curtain maker Erik Bruce, who gave the panels a subtle gradient that increases in opacity as it gets closer to the ground. The white sheer panel also acts as a backdrop for the furniture when looking out from within the space, instead of giving visitors an unobstructed view of parked cars on West Broadway.

While the gallery itself mainly services the trade industry and showcases made-to-order items, Lin wanted to create opportunities for curious passersby to stop in and shop. She began sourcing a curated collection of antique tabletop items at auctions and flea markets to sell in the space, which allows Colony to tell a wider story to the general public. “Our trade clients also are always looking for accessories, so I thought that it was kind of a win-win,” she adds.

Ceramic furniture and accessories designer Bari Ziperstein joins the gallery in its new outpost; Colony is also showcasing new works from its past roster of independent designers, including Bec Brittain’s Phaedra collection, the new Off-Grid wall cabinet by Grain, a Roebuck dresser from Scheibe Design, and two quilts by M.Callahan Studio.

“A lot of people at our opening were talking about how it feels like we’ve grown up, and it’s this huge coming-of-age moment for us,” she says. “For me, I don’t feel grown-up. I feel like we’re still pushing ourselves, trying to not be held back by fear of failure and fear of people not understanding our mission.” 196 West Broadway, New York
