Colonel Davenport House opens for season

A landmark on Arsenal Island is opening for the season.

The Colonel Davenport House, on the north end of Arsenal Island, is opening for the season starting Thursday, May 2. The house is open each week through the end of October on Thursday-Saturday from 12-4 p.m. The Colonel Davenport Historical Foundation (CDHF) will update attendees on their projects at 12 p.m.

Anyone 18 years or older must have a current U.S. picture ID to enter Arsenal Island because it is a working military facility. Stop at the Visitor Control Center at the Moline gate if you need a pass.

The Colonel Davenport House was the first permanent house in the Quad Cities. Davenport was a U.S. Army veteran and served for ten years. He came to Rock Island in 1816 as a civilian with a contract to supply rations to the soldiers at Fort Armstrong. He supervised the construction of the bake house, the first building on Arsenal Island. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was built in 1833-1834.

The Colonel Davenport Historical Foundation is a nonprofit, all volunteer organization that preserves Colonel Davenport’s former home and shares his story with the community.
