“Let’s make it a weekend.” Can you count the number of times you've said that to a friend or family member this time of year? There are many reasons why fall getaways in the South are a good idea: the weather is finally getting cooler, the leaves are turning glorious shades of crimson and gold, and college football is kicking into full swing. When we started talking about our first-ever “College Towns We Love” Digital Issue, our editors wanted to highlight destinations that don’t always make the must-visit lists. In the South, travel stories are all about the thrill of the hunt, so we set out to search for the picturesque tiny towns and under-the-radar cities that really come alive this season.

“It takes more than just a campus to make a college town special, and certain ones have qualities that make them stand out," writes Southern Living Editor Kaitlyn Yarborough in our cover story. And that’s exactly what we thought about during our planning process. It was important to share spots that offer something for everyone–great food, family-friendly entertainment, outdoor activities–while also highlighting those close knit communities that celebrate the culture, the traditions, and the spirit of game day.

We found that magic in Athens, Baton Rouge, and Fayetteville.

While the Georgia Bulldogs might have the best team in college football (at time of publication), they also call Athens, one of the most vibrant music cities in the region, their hometown. When we talk about camaraderie and collegiate sports, there's no way to overlook Louisiana State University, which we couldn't wait to bring to life for this issue. Senior Lifestyle Producer, Ivy Odom, headed from Birmingham to Baton Rouge for her very first time, and came back one of its most enthusiastic fans. “When I got in the car at the airport, the first question the driver asked was ‘Where are you eating?’ The rest of the ride was filled with restaurant recommendations, zydeco music, and can't-miss local favorites. That was my first introduction to the warm, welcoming, proud community of Baton Rouge,” says Ivy. Finally, if you love the outdoors, don't miss Fayetteville, home to the Arkansas Razorbacks, and a true hidden gem. Staff Photographer Robbie Caponetto returned from the photo shoot mesmerized by the city’s natural beauty and gracious hospitality.

Of course these are just three of our top college towns, and in this Digital Issue you’ll find so much more, from stunning campuses to legendary landmarks across the region. And if that's not enough, our editors listed 62 reasons why college is just better here. We hope you’ll be inspired to start planning a long weekend away to experience the energy, excitement, and charm of fall in the South.  -Krissy Tiglias & Sid Evans
