The bromance between Colin Firth and Matthew Macfadyen continues. In a new profile in Vanity Fair of Macfadyen, Firth reveals he loved Macfadyen's portrayal of Mr. Darcy in the 2005 Pride & Prejudice—so much that he wrote him fan mail.

"I finally understood the character!" Firth says. "I had to write a fan letter. Definitely my favorite Darcy."

The two have had long careers since portraying the Jane Austen romantic hero in their respective adaptations of Pride & Prejudice, and now, they're currently costarring in Netflix's Operation Mincemeat, a World War II-era spy drama, which finds them in a love triangle, each vying for the attention of Kelly Macdonald's character Jean. That said, Firth quipped that he and Macfadyen "did sort of fall in love, bromantically" while making the movie.

In a different recent interview, Firth praised Macfadyen's ability to tell the whole Pride & Prejudice story in just a two hour film. "It’s much more challenging to do it as a feature film. Because if you do a six-parter, you’ve got six hours to put it all in and let it unfold at a pace which is closer to that of a book. I think what was masterful about Matthew’s interpretation was that he did manage to tell that whole story in a more condensed form. And I think that’s very difficult because it’s so dependent on a slow reveal. You think he’s one thing, and gradually, we’ve lived with the doubt about that, and the perceptions gradually and slowly change."

And the love isn't just a one-way street: Macfadyen said that Firth had "a big influence" on pursuing acting as a career.
