If I, as someone of being-named-Eileen experience, may venture to say: The Irish are having an incredible run in Hollywood these days. Despite losing Best Actor for his performance in The Banshees of Inisherin, Colin Farrell was the lovable MVP of the 2023 awards season; he and his Banshees compatriots Barry Keoghan, Brendan Gleeson, and Kerry Condon may have all left the Oscars empty-handed, but their Irish charm (and the allure of Farrell’s character’s Aran-Island-made sweaters) endured. The year continued: Keoghan went on to do unspeakable things in Saltburn. Paul Mescal—who was also nominated for an Academy Award last year—did pleasurable things with Andrew Scott in All of Us Strangers (and in this viral photo), as well as haunting things with Saoirse Ronan in Foes. And then, of course, Cillian Murphy blew things up in the surprise smash-hit Oppenheimer.

But let’s circle back to Farrell, whose national enthusiasm even extends to his wardrobe. He wore an Irish lapel pin to the Oscars, and last week, he showed off his country pride while electronics shopping in Hollywood last week sporting a terry-cloth headband bearing the green, orange, and white stripes of Ireland’s flag. It was a bright addition up his otherwise very post-holiday ensemble: a black wool overcoat, low-scoop-necked gray tank, black-and-gray checked pajama pants, and a pair of low-profile black slippers that, if you squint, sort of look like they could be ballet flats from The Row. (Which they’re almost certainly not, but can you imagine if they were?)

And whether you’re Irish or not, I choose to see this as an auspicious accessory for the new year. Because something I have just now decided is: Every time you see Colin Farrell wearing one of his little headbands, it’s good luck.
