Stock up on gifts and prep the hot pot — Lunar New Year is almost here! In the run-up to the holiday, we’ve been fueling up with Yishi’s Asian-inspired oatmeal. However, seeing as porridge or congee (which is a similar texture to oatmeal) is an unlucky food to eat on Lunar New Year, we’ll be skipping it on the actual day, which this year, falls on Jan. 21 (and maybe on the New Year’s Eve dinner celebration, too). But every day up to and after that? Meet our new favorite breakfast.

Founded by Lin Jiang, Yishi launched last summer and has been revolutionizing the way we think of oatmeal ever since. Available in flavors like taro bubble tea, matcha latte, red bean berry, toasted black sesame, and sweet osmanthus, Yishi’s oatmeals are not only super tasty, but they’re also pretty good for you. They’re vegan and gluten-free, made with whole foods, provide fiber and protein, and are organic.

Jiang created her line of oatmeals because she wasn’t a fan of the options she found in the U.S., and was homesick for her mother’s cooking. These combined led her to make Yishi. “I moved to the U.S. from China when I was 18,” she said. “After college, I was working long hours and eating lots of oatmeal at my desk. I found the instant oatmeal options available to be either sugary or bland, sometimes both. It was the same three flavors that everyone has had a million times. I was tired of this and missed the breakfast porridge my mother made me as a child, which was healthy but also delicious. So inspired by her, I combined Asian ingredients with traditional oatmeal and created Yishi.”

Each flavor of Jiang’s Asian-inspired oatmeal does more than just feed you. For instance, the toasted black sesame variant is meant to provide you with energy for your day, the taro bubble tea helps you focus, and the matcha latte has caffeine to help with vitality.

You can buy cups or pouches of these oatmeals from Yishi’s website, where they start at around $6. Try one flavor at a time or get a bundle to try a few flavors.

We know oatmeal might not be considered auspicious for Lunar New Year, but given that it gives us energy, makes our skin glow, and improves our focus (and, of course, tastes delicious, apart from its myriad of heart-heathy benefits), we feel pretty lucky to have it as an option for our breakfast tables.
