Cody Townsend Skis Remote Island Where Iconic James Bond Scene Was Filmed

Professional skier Cody Townsend traveled to Canada's remote Baffin Island this winter for an epic descent of The Polar Star Couloir.

Salomon Freeski, one of Townsend's main sponsors, posted a clip on the morning of August 9th, 2023 to tease the yet-to-be-released full video of the expedition.

Check it out below.

Townsend traveled to ski The Polar Star Couloir as part of his mission to ascend and ski all of the lines laid out in the 'Fifty Classic Ski Descents of North America' book by Chris Davenport, Penn Newhard, Art Burrows.

Townsend is documenting his missions in a video series called 'The Fifty Project'. Click here to watch previous episodes. If you want to learn more about the skis he's using in the video, click here for Powder's review of the Salomon QST Echo 106.

Baffin Island is also home to Mount Asgard, the filming location for the iconic cliff jumping scene that was featured in 1977 James Bond flick 'The Spy Who Loved Me'.

Climber and stuntman Rick Sylvester was hired to recreate a similar stunt that he filmed for Canadian Club Whiskey. Sylvester falsified the stunt for the commercial, but insisted it could actually be done for the Bond film.

The stunt reportedly cost $500,000 to film, the most ever spent on a single stunt in film history up to that point. The investment paid off.

You won't see Cody Townsend launching himself off a 6,000 foot mountain on Baffin Island anytime soon, and that's okay. We can leave the stunts to the stuntmen and stuntwomen.

Rather, Townsend scored a rarely-skied powdery line on one of the most remote places on planet earth. Personally, I'm more impressed by Townsend's achievements than a James Bond stuntman, but maybe that's just me.

I'm very much looking forward to Townsend's full Baffin Island episode for 'The Fifty' when it drops this fall.
