Of course, Netflix's Cobra Kai, which debuted its fifth season last week on Netflix, is usually about the laughs. But at the end of Episode Three, "Playing With Fire," there's a surprisingly somber moment.

As the episode draws to a close, we see a title card that reads, "In Memoriam / Jeff Kay / 1965-2021." For those who are unfamiliar with Kay, he was an assistant director for Cobra Kai, who died in October 2021 at the age of 56. Kay held numerous assistant director roles over the course of the past few years, working as an assistant director on American Housewife, Numb3ers, Entourage, and Profiler. Actor Jewel Shepard wrote on Twitter, memorializing Kaym "Directors set the tone for a project, but a 1st AD is the pulse of a production. A beloved AD is one who can via his energy and enthusiasm as well as knowledge can keep folks invigorated to continue a 15 hour day going 5 days a week, through pandemics, problems, etc. on budget."

With a series like Cobra Kai, which turns out seasons like clockwork, it's easy to forget the hundreds upon hundreds of cast and crew members who have a hand in making the show something families enjoy. Cobra Kai previously offered a similar tribute to actor Rob Garrison. All of that said, it's great to see Kay, who clearly made a lasting impression with those he worked with, getting the tribute he deserves.
