'Cobra Kai' Has Already Filmed Season 5

The following story contains spoilers for Cobra Kai Season 4.

If it feels like there's been a lot of Cobra Kai in a short period of time, well, you're right. And there's a good reason why—most people didn't really watch Cobra Kai until it first hit Netflix in late August of 2020. But at that point the show had already had two full seasons—which were released in 2018 and 2019 on the now defunct YouTube Red/YouTube Premium. So people binged those two right when they came out, and then, at the end of 2020, Season 3 came out on Netflix. Fast forward a full year later, and Season 4 is coming out just at the end of December 2021; that's four seasons of Cobra Kai in just about 16 months. Not bad. And guess what? Season 5 of Cobra Kai is already on the way.

Usually, a show's initial premise might start to dry up as it heads towards its fifth season—but that's clearly not the case with Cobra Kai. Showrunners Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald clearly had a plan mapped out here, and each season is strucutred in a way where the stakes feel real and the episodes are able to be breezed right through. Season 4's set-up of an epic All-Valley Karate Tournament came through, with some great set piece scenes, character development, and, of course, fights, along the way.

Still, Season 4 ends and the show doesn't just have us wanting more—it has us needing more. Each character is in a place where there's still room to grow, and places for their story to go.

So, without further ado, we know you're wondering the deal—here's what we know about the forthcoming Cobra Kai Season 5.

Will there be a Cobra Kai Season 5?

There will indeed. Cobra Kai was renewed for Season 5 way back in August, more than four months before its eventual Season 4 premiere.

And even better news? Season 5 (we assume at this point) is done with filming. When asked for a detail about Miguel and Sam's relationship in Season 4 on Twitter, co-creator Jon Hurwitz revealed the new season's status. "It’s disorienting for me to even try answering this because we’re currently filming the final episodes of Season 5," he said in a late November Tweet.

Season 5 won't be the end of Cobra Kai either.

In an interview with ScreenRant, co-creator Josh Heald confirmed that Season 5 would be just another chapter in the Cobra Kai story, but not the end. "We have more beyond season 5," he said. "We are not writing to the end of the series in season 5 right now."

What will Season 5 of Cobra Kai be about?

As we saw at the end of Cobra Kai Season 4, the season finds many characters in new ant enticing situations. Let's start with Daniel LaRusso, who's now teamed up with Chozen. Despite Cobra Kai winning the All-Valley Tournament, Daniel just can't stand by and let them get bigger and bigger and bigger. So he finds his old frenemy (who we saw last season!) and starts, we assume, cooking up a plan.

Speaking of that Cobra Kai victory, that's a whole can of worms that Season 5 will get into as well. We saw after the win that Terry Silver is in full villain mode, as he bribed the official to get his dojo the win; Tory overheard this. She's elated that she won and was the hero, but most be conflicted because it's not the way to win. Have to predict that she and Robby find their way out of there at some point and join forces with the good guys.

Speaking of good guys, both of our Cobra Kai senseis are certainly not that. But one of them might be more "good" than the other; Kreese showed a moment of sensitivity when he told Tory to fight how she wanted to instead of how Silver was telling her too. And Silver thanked him for that later with a glass of fancy champagne....and at least a brief stint in a jai cell. It turns out, Silver framed Kreese for the assault (and attempted murder?) of Stingray that one night in the Cobra Kai dojo. Why Stingray agreed to go along with it is anyone's guess, but Kreese is in big trouble, and Silver has tons of resources to build the Cobra Kai footprint and spread all sorts of bad vibes, bad ethics, and (probably) general douchebaggery.

Johnny's side of things also has plenty of moving pieces as well. He's moving towards a reconciliation with Robby (and about time!), but he does seem to be moving farther away from Miguel, which is sad (that one late season moment—you know the one—was heartbreaking). Miguel is going to find his birth father, who Carmen tells Johnny doesn't even know Miguel exists, and is a bad guy, and Johnny is going after him. Obviously that will be a whole thing.

And speaking of Robby, he's come a long way (he's a good kid now), but he seems to have gotten himself into a pickle with bringing young Kenny (a sweetheart who LaRusso's random son and his terrible friends were total jerks to for no reason) into Cobra Kai and basically entirely corrupting his mind. Robby will definitely be trying to save Kenny from the dark side in Season 5.

Who will be in the cast?

Much of the cast will, clearly, remain. That means William Zabka, Ralph Macchio, Xolo Maridueña, Mary Mouser, Tanner Buchanan, Jacob Bertrand, Peyton List, Gianni Decenzo, Courtney Henggeler, Thomas Ian Griffith, and Martin Kove will likely all be back, among others. We'd also add Dallas Dupree Young (as Kenny) and Yuji Okomoto (as Chozen) as characters who seem primed for bigger roles in the next season.

When will Cobra Kai Season 5 come out?

It's hard to say for sure, but we've got a two-year streak of the show coming out on New Year's now. So maybe New Year's of 2022 into 2023? But with the new season either done filming or damn close, maybe it comes out even sooner. In Cobra Kai we trust—whenever they say it's the right time for Season 5, it's the right time for Season 5.
