Coast Guard Rescues Dog Who Fell Off Oregon Cliff in Dramatic Video

Every dog owner wants one simple thing: a happy and healthy pup. I get it! Whether that means switching to a more expensive dog food or taking long walks through the park every day, we dog people are willing to do most anything for the love of our furry friends. The only downside is that it can be so easy to get so caught up in the happy moment with your dog that you miss something else entirely.

That's what happened to one Oregon couple on New Year's Day while enjoying a walk near the beach. While walking one of their dogs, their 3-year-old Golden Retriever, Leo, ran too far ahead and fell about 300 feet from a cliff to the beach below. Before you get too worried, though--he's okay! He did not suffer any life-threatening injuries in the fall, and people are more riveted by the daring Coast Guard rescue it took to reach the poor pup. Take a look!

Whether or not you believe in miracles, it's impossible to deny that Leo the Golden Retriever is one lucky dog. This Astoria, Oregon resident is no stranger to this area in Ecola State Park, but his injuries and the massive cliffs made it impossible for him to leave on his own. Even though the fire department planned to repel down the cliffs, according to CBS News, the Coast Guard initiated an air rescue because it was already getting close to sundown. As the @abcworldnews video shows, they arrived on the scene around 3 p.m., and Leo was in his parents' arms just one hour and 15 minutes later.

Needless to say, people are sending their well-wishes to Leo, as well as major kudos and praise to the team that rescued him. The rescue swimmer received a big bear hug from the dog's dad, though in my opinion, they deserve a massive raise or bonus. As someone who hails from Oregon, trust me...that water is cold. Canine hypothermia could've been an issue for Leo had they waited for the fire department, so the Coast Guard literally saved the dog's life.

Safety is Essential While on Walking Dogs

Leo, his parents, and his canine sibling are all residents of this coastal town, so it's possible that everyone let their guard down just a bit too much. It's not specified whether Leo was on a leash, but preventative measures could have been taken to stop the dog from running ahead. Whether it means practicing obedience training more often or purchasing a front-clip harness for dogs who pull on the leash, it's important to do all that you can to keep your furry friend safe on their walks. No pet parent can predict everything, but a little preparation can go a long way.

I'm so relieved that Leo is recovering from his broken jaw and pneumothorax at home after just two days in the hospital. It sounds like he's going to be just fine, though I imagine his parents are still rather shaken.
