Closed in Rockland: A 'dive bar,' brewery, coffeeshop, Latin eatery and a longtime market

Since August, Nyack has seen a host of closings, including a small grocer, a coffee shop and a lively Latin eatery, while in Congers, a popular dive bar has closed. There's more closing news in Garnerville, where a much loved brewery, known as much for its dog and kid-friendly vibe as it was for its brick arches, is hosting its last weekend Oct. 26 to 29.

On the plus side, new places are in the works — scroll down to find out what and stay tuned to lohud for more details.

Industrial Arts Brewing Co., Garnerville

Industrial Arts Brewing, in the Garnerville Arts and Industrial Center since 2016, will pour its last beers this weekend. The brewery opened a larger 150,000-square-foot facility in Beacon, complete with a bar and beer garden, in 2019, and it's there that it is officially moving its operations. A post about its closing was made on Instagram Oct. 25, encouraging people to "get outside, come on over and some some pints, stories, laughs and maybe a few tears."

Coming into the Garnerville space, which dates to the late 1700s: Round Table Brewery, which opens Nov. 2. The brewery, owned by Ricardo Petroni, a co-founder of Equilibrium Brewery, will feature beers such as a rustic ale, double IPA, barrel aged rustic ale and more with, as their website says, a "focus on striking a balance between precision and balance on the one hand with flavor and character on the other." No food at the moment, but stay tuned. 55 W Railroad Ave # 25, 845-942-8776, industrialartsbrewing.com

Peppermill South, Congers

After 18 years in Congers, Peppermill South Owner Katie Frawley announced the sale — and the mixed emotions of selling her business — on Facebook Sept. 15, saying it was "the end of an era." The restaurant was featured in our "dive bar" story last year.

"As I close this chapter of my life, I am reflecting on all the great memories, people, and all the special characters who have been apart of this journey," she wrote.

"Over the past 18 years I have experienced success as well as many challenges. Peppermill Idol, Diamond Drinks, Guest Bartending Contest, Mediumship Nights, 300 Clubs, Fundraisers, Birthday Parties, Retirement Parties, Christmas parties and tons of theme parties are just a few of the amazing memories we created here. Another highlight for me, with being recognized as Rockland County’s Business Woman of the Year.

"Most of all, I am proud for creating something very special within the community. Peppermill South became the local 'cheers' of Congers."

The spot will re-open in November under new ownership as a modern American restaurant called Four Star Cafe. Some may know the faces behind the new eatery: It's owned by the Nicosia family, which has been in the restaurant business in Rockland since 1964. 31 Lake Road

Punta Cana Latin Fusion, Nyack

This Latin fusion restaurant, known for its lively atmosphere, live music and medley of dishes honoring the flavors of Cuba, Puerto Rica and the Dominican Republic, closed in August, a few months shy of almost two years of business.

Already, there's a new restaurant coming to the space at 125 Main Street. Look for Nyack Social opening soon, a new contemporary fusion eatery and sports bar owned by Albin Infante, who owns Ruby Restaurant & Bar in New Paltz and Mofongo Tipico in the Bronx.

Starbucks, Nyack

Starbucks, long a fixture in Nyack for its coffee, lattes and cozy space inside for working remote — it even had a fireplace — closed Sept. 30. A new location, at 25 Route 304 in Nanuet, should open next spring, complete with a drive-thru. Signage posted outside the Nyack store reads "Miss you already but we look forward to welcoming you to another location."

Village Market, Nyack

Everything from take-out sushi to last minute groceries to fresh flowers were available at this North Broadway market, which was in Nyack for 20 years (under various ownerships). It closed at the end of September.

Nyack Grill & Bar, Nyack

Open since September 2021, the restaurant's last post on social media says they're on an extended vacation. Signage outside, however, reads that the American-style bar and grill is closed for renovations. Their website is no longer operational nor is the phone number in service. Repeated attempts to reach the owner haven't been answered, so stay tuned to lohud for updates. 173 Main St.

The Burger Loft, long popular in New City for its burgers and beer — it's part of District 96 Beer Factory — is opening a second location in Nyack around Nov. 20 in the former Hudson Market space, where, most recently, Rising Above Bakery had temporarily been. 5 N Broadway, theburgerloft.com
