When Memorial Day rolls around, it typically means a day off work and potentially an added shopping day. Luckily for you, not everything is closed on Memorial Day. Most major retailers, including grocery stores, restaurants and retail stores, remain open on Memorial Day, which falls on May 29 in 2023. However, there are a few notable exceptions. So with that in mind, we’re taking a look at the handful of national chains that are closed for Memorial Day 2023.

Stores Closed on Memorial Day 2023
Costco
Costco traditionally closes for major U.S. holidays, including Memorial Day. The warehouse giant also closes on New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
Natural Grocers
This natural food chain, which operates more than 162 stores across 20 states, will also be closed on Memorial Day, according to its website. Like Costco, it's traditionally closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day and the 4th of July.
Giving employees these holidays off—with holiday pay—is part of the company’s ethos, the grocery chain explains on its website.
“We live and breathe family. At the end of the day, it’s the people we love that make it all worthwhile,” the company says. “We also think it’s the best thing about the holidays — they’re a chance to spend time with loved ones.”

UPS
UPS Store locations will be closed on Memorial Day and there will be no UPS pickup or delivery service on Memorial Day, the company confirmed online.
However, the UPS Express Critical service will continue to operate on Memorial Day. UPS recommends calling 1-800-714-8779 or visiting the UPS Critical website to learn more about this express service.
FedEx
Some FedEx Office locations will be closed on Memorial Day, while others will have modified hours, according to its website. Check with your location for more details.
Meanwhile, most FedEx services, with the exception of FedEx Custom Critical, will not be operating on Memorial Day. Closed services include FedEx Express, FedEx Freight, FedEx Ground, FedEx Home Delivery, FedEx Ground Economy and FedEx Trade Networks. Services that remain open, though, include FedEx Custom Critical and FedEx Office has modified hours.

Public Services
As Memorial Day is a federal holiday, public and private institutions including banks, schools, post offices, libraries and federal offices are typically closed on this day.

While most major retailers are open on Memorial Day, some smaller local businesses may choose to close or have reduced hours on Memorial Day, so check with the business before heading out to shop.
