There are all kinds of gadgets in our lives that we need to clean (admittedly, way more often than we probably do). From cleaning essential oil diffusers to Keurig coffee machines and your iPhone, we touch an infinite number of surfaces throughout our daily lives, and it's in our best interest to follow up those touches with a healthy dose of scrubbing. Even the tiniest members of our tech arsenal need cleaning, which brings us to the task of cleaning our AirPods.

While AirPods are seriously handy, they can be baffling to clean. With tiny nooks and mesh speakers, AirPods can become miniature basins of dirt and germs. But there are some easy ways you can clean them at home. While there are kits you can purchase that help with cleaning the small crevices on AirPods, you can do it with lint-free cloths, too. Check out these tips and tricks for how to clean your AirPods with cleaning supplies you already have at home.

How to Disinfect the Outside of Your AirPods

Clorox wipes or a 70-percent isopropyl alcohol wipe can be used to gently wipe the exterior of your AirPods (not the mesh speaker).

You want to start by using a soft, lint-free cloth. Wipe down the AirPods using a cloth that’s been slightly dampened with water. Let them dry completely before putting them back in the charging case, and don’t use them until that time, too.

Do your best to avoid getting anything wet onto the mesh speaker.

If you need to clean the case, use the same lint-free cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Avoid getting any liquid in the ports!

Avoid using anything sharp or abrasive to clean the mesh. Instead, use a dry cotton swab to gently clear away and dirt or debris resting on the mesh.

If you find that you just can't quite get the gunk out on your own, it might be time to invest a few bucks in a handy kit, like this one.

Don’t:

  • Use bleach.

  • Submerge the AirPods in any solution or water.
