Classic Summer Ski Area Closes Unexpectedly

It was a short stint for Wyoming's summer snowboarding resort who announced their closing for the season this past week. Beartooth Basin posted to Facebook with announcement stating: "Beartooth Basin is Closed. We had an awesome run, but Mother Nature has not cooperated as of yet. We are up there doing work, and if by chance we get new snow, we may open for a bonus weekend this upcoming weekend. Fingers crossed! Thank you all for the love and support."

If you have never heard of the resort, that is understandable. It is not the most well known since the operating months are basically in the Northern Hemisphere's shoulder season. Beartooth Basin is a unique and renowned ski area located in the Beartooth Mountains of Montana and Wyoming, near the famous Beartooth Pass. The ski area is situated on the Beartooth Highway, a scenic road that connects the towns of Red Lodge, Montana, and Cooke City, Montana, and passes through the Beartooth Pass at an elevation of over 10,000 feet. Beartooth Basin sits at an even higher elevation, reaching up to 10,900 feet, making it one of the highest ski areas in North America.

Due to its lofty altitude and challenging terrain, Beartooth Basin operates as a summer ski resort, typically opening from late May or early June through July or early August. They had a rough start to the season this year already closing earlier in the year due to inclement weather. Looks like Hood will be the main option for summer snowboarding this year.
