Classic New Hampshire Ski Area Ceases Operations: "We Will Miss You"

Black Mountain, located in Jackson, New Hampshire, is one of the nation's oldest ski areas. Skiers have been descending its slopes since 1935.

Unfortunately, the ski area announced in a somber social media post on October 11th, 2023 that they will not open this coming season citing, "circumstances beyond (their) control".

You can read the Facebook post in full below:

From the caption:

"It is with sadness that we share that Black Mountain Ski Area will not open for the 2023-2024 season.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, including soaring energy costs, unpredictable weather, extreme staffing shortages throughout the region, and many other challenges, we have made the very difficult decision to cease operations.

If you had purchased season passes for the upcoming ski season, we have begun the process of reimbursement, and you will hear from us very soon. We apologize for any inconvenience.

To all of our past and present team members, all season pass holders and guests, extended family and friends - thank you for your support over the years, we will miss you.

Thank you for being the true spirit of skiing and keeping the dream alive.

Sincerely,

The Fichera Family

According to New England Ski History, Black Mountain is the oldest ski area in the state. The site also notes that the Fichera family has owned and operated Black Mountain since March of 1996.

Black's closure is red flag for many homegrown ski areas across New England that lack ample snowmaking capabilities and corporate backing.

As Black Mountain stated in their caption, "soaring energy costs, unpredictable weather, (and) extreme staffing shortages throughout the region" are challenges faced by ski resorts across the country, not just New England.

It's a shame to see one of New England's classic ski areas fall by the wayside while large corporate resorts seem to be flourishing.

Here's hoping this season isn't the end of Black Mountain's story.
