This class of fourth-graders hilariously reacts to the drama of ‘The Sound of Music’ in viral TikTok

The hills are alive with the sound of gasping fourth-graders! In this now-viral TikTok, a classroom full of kiddos watches “The Sound of Music” for the first time and simply cannot handle the “drama” of it all. And it’s everything.

The commentary is simply delightful—from their observations about Fraulein Maria and Captain Von Trapp dancing to the dramatic entrance of Baroness Schraeder as she “catches” the captain “cheating.”

“There is nothing more entertaining than soaking in the commentary from a room full of kids experiencing this movie for the first time,” music teacher Cassidy Markley captions her amazing video.

And she’s right. Just listen for yourself, and see how long it takes before you burst out laughing.

When you’ve seen “The Sound of Music” a million times, as many of us have by now, it’s easy to forget that this very innocent, very sweet film is also powerful and a wee bit scandalous (i.e. the power imbalance of Captain Von Trapp and his nanny who is also a nun).

It’s hard to decide which fourth-grader has the best reaction, so here are some of the best ones:

“He’s cheating!”

“Now THAT’S a Kim Kardashian dress.”

“Caught in 4k!”

“Guys, it’s not that weird, they’re just dancing.”

“Imagine the baroness sees them doing this!”

“Someone is gonna get their heart broke.”

“Omg heart attack!”

“Just KISS!”

If nothing else, it’s a lovely introduction for a brand-new generation to admire the vocal stylings and charm of Julie Andrews and the absolute smolder of young Christopher Plummer.

If you have a kiddo around the same age, you’re probably not surprised at the commentary—my own 7-year-old regularly cracks me up with her cultural criticisms and observations (she recently explained to me what a “Karen” is, for example).

It’s also a nostalgic reminder of that end-of-the-school-year feeling, where your teachers would wheel in the television and take a much-needed break (when “Selena” would come on in our Spanish classroom, I knew the last day of school was nigh).

It’s also a solid reminder that no matter the generation, kids do indeed say the darndest things!
