REI's April shoe sale has some of the best hiking boots from brands like Merrell and Keen for under $100 right now, but one of the most interesting styles you'll find during the sale hasn't been used for trekking since the 1940s. Desert boots, which were a wartime creation for venturing through the Sahara, were iconized by none other than Clarks. And while the brand's classic desert boot remains nearly untouched, its more comfortable successor just saw its price get slashed in half.

Right now, the Clarks Desert Coal Boots are on sale at REI for just $80—50% off the normal $160 price. This style has been a hit with shoppers, with some even having said that they're better than the original desert boot. They're currently available in black, tan, and gray in sizes ranging from 7 to 13.

These desert boots, however simple, are a refreshed version of the original with two major upgrades: a wedge sole and three-eyelet lacing. The upper is made with English-tanned suede from the family-run Charles F. Stead company, which prides itself on quality, selection, and consistency. The sole is made from Clarks' traditional crepe material, but instead of the low block heel seen in the classic model, this pair opts for the increased cushion of a wedge sole. The third eyelet in this boot will allow for better tightening and a more secure fit than the original without detracting from the look.

Shoppers who have found their way to this Clarks desert boot have been impressed with its new features in comparison to the original. "An improvement on the original," a shopper exclaimed. "I've had a couple of pairs of original desert boots, which look good but aren't great for walking. These are much better, due to the thicker sole. These are the Clark's desert boots I'll be wearing moving forward!"

Many agreed that, other than appearance, it's the comfort these boots offer that allows them to reign supreme over their predecessor. "Pure class," one shopper said. "Classic shoes never go out of fashion. Fit and feel are like you are wearing a pair of slippers. Will order another pair in the brown!" Another shopper agreed, saying, "Really happy with the new more comfortable and supportive sole. Seems as if the insole has been beefed up as well. Little to no break-in period."

Clarks' desert boots are modern classics that don't typically go on sale, which is why this one is such a steal at just $80. With REI's shoe sale in full force, we're expecting sizes to start selling out soon. So if you've been looking for a spring boot to upgrade your wardrobe for work to weekend wear, pick up a pair in your favorite color while it's still around.
