Claire's makeup products tested positive for asbestos—again

Scary news about every ’90s kid‘s former favorite store in the mall, Claire’s, has emerged today. The FDA has officially put out a warning about three Claire’s makeup products—the Claire’s Eye Shadows, Compact Powder, and Contour Palette, which have been found to contain traces of asbestos (!). Asbestos can cause various forms of cancer, as well as lung disorders, according to Cancer.gov.

The FDA has issued a safety alert on the three products, according to CNN, after the products tested positive for tremolite asbestos. Apparently, the products aren’t currently for sale, but customers who have them at home should definitely stop using them. Claire’s, however, insists that it has removed the three products, as well as any talc-based products, from all of its stores. Claire’s said in a statement that its products are indeed safe and that “customer safety is paramount.”

According to CNN, the store is also not happy about the FDA’s tests, saying, “The recent test results the FDA have shared with us show significant errors. Specifically, the FDA test reports have mischaracterized fibers in the products as asbestos, in direct contradiction to established EPA and USP criterion for classifying asbestos fibers. Despite our efforts to discuss these issues with the FDA, they insisted on moving forward with their release.”

The brand continued by saying it was “disappointed that the FDA has taken this step, and we will continue to work with them to demonstrate the safety of our products.”

You may recall that this isn’t the first time Claire’s has dealt with an asbestos-related controversy. Asbestos can be quite dangerous when its particles enter the lungs or stomach, so we’ll eagerly await any further updates from the FDA or Claire’s.
