City of Joplin Recycling Center hosts successful tire drop-off event

JOPLIN, Mo. — It was a busy Saturday at the City of Joplin Recycling Center.

Folks living in Jasper, Newton, McDonald, Barton, and Vernon counties had a chance to properly dispose of unwanted tires.

Center officials estimate around 240 vehicles visited, today, as they gained nearly three-ton worth of metal and over 1,400 tires.

They say if you have tires you need to get rid of – you can still do this.

“There’s not much alternatives, if you’re a resident of the city of Joplin, you can take it out to GFL Joplin Transfer Station – we have a subsidized program with them. Just take your license and trash bill to show your residency – and then they will take the tires – up to five tires per visit for $2.80 a piece. And that’s only other option besides take it to Goodyear, or some of those places sometimes, but they still cost. But nobody that I know of will take them with rims,” said Scott Patterson, City of Joplin Recycling Coordinator

Patterson says he’s looking into potentially offering the free drop-off twice a year in the future.
