From Town & Country

Pretty much since The Odyssey was written, way back around the 8th century BCE, Circe's gotten a bad rap. Two millennia and change later, author Madeline Miller's novel Circe flipped the script, telling the age-old story from the sorceress's perspective.

The book was a hit, reaching the top spot on the New York Times bestseller list—and now, it'll have a chance to reach a new audience, thanks to the soon-to-launch streaming service HBO Max. Here's what we know about Circe's upcoming television adaptation.

The showrunners have plenty of experience with big Hollywood productions.

Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver will write and executive produce the series. The duo are known for their work on Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Jurassic World. Jaffa and Silver also worked on the upcoming live-action Mulan, and the long-planned Avatar 3.

The head of HBO Max's original content offered an idea of what's in store.

"Circe tells an epic story of love, loss, tragedy, and immortal conflict, all through the eyes of a fierce female lens," said Sarah Aubrey, HBO Max's original content head, per the Hollywood Reporter. "I’ve been a longtime fan of Rick and Amanda’s work and their ability to simultaneously build epic imaginative worlds while creating emotional dynamic characters."

Eight episodes have been ordered—and the series might end there.

When she shared the news on Twitter, Madeline Miller called the show a "miniseries," prompting speculation that the series could conclude after its first eight-episode run.
