Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber's Relationship Timeline

How a friendship blossomed into long-lasting love.

When Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber first crossed paths in the early 1990s, they weren't looking for love. The supermodel was married to Richard Gere and the businessman was also in a relationship, but the fact that they were both unavailable seemingly worked out for the best—at least, Crawford thinks so.  

"Rande also had a girlfriend at the time so he wasn't looking to meet anyone either and that's the best time to meet someone because that's when you're truly yourselves," she explained during a 2015 interview with Harper's Bazaar. The two became friends, and once Crawford and Gere broke up in 1995, she and Gerber began dating. They got married three years later and soon expanded their family, welcoming a son, Presley, and then a daughter, Kaia.

But the friendship they developed has remained at the core of their 25-year-long marriage: "'We started off as friends, and I know that Rande and I, we will always be friends, no matter what," Crawford said back in 2013.

Early 1990s: Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber first meet.

Crawford and Gerber met as two strangers at a wedding back in the '90s. "We met at my agent's wedding,” Crawford recalled during an interview with Harper's Bazaar, adding that her then-husband Richard Gere didn't want to go. At the wedding, she met Gerber, who was also in a relationship, and the two became friends. Things eventually turned romantic when Crawford ended her marriage to Gere in 1995.

A year after making their relationship officially known to the public, Crawford and Gerber tied the knot during an intimate ceremony on the beach in the Bahamas. Rather than a custom gown, the supermodel opted for a ready-to-wear John Galliano white lace minidress with no shoes, while Gerber wore black trousers and a relaxed white button-up.

"I wore John Galliano off the rack because the wedding was supposed to be secret,” she later explained to Harper’s Bazaar. “We married in the Bahamas in front of our friends and family and it was so special—it was different for my second wedding. We walked each other down the aisle."

July 1999: Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber welcome their first child together.

The couple wasted no time in expanding their family. By the next summer, Crawford and Gerber welcomed their first child together, a son named Presley, on July 2, 1999.

September 2001: Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber welcome a baby girl.

Two years after Presley's arrival, Crawford and Gerber welcomed their second child, a baby girl, Kaia Jordan Gerber, on September 3, 2001.

March 2008: The Crawford-Gerbers hit the red carpet as a family of four.

Crawford and Gerber showed off their genetically-blessed family while walking the red carpet with their mini-mes at a charity event in Los Angeles.

March 2013: Cindy Crawford says her and Rande Gerber's marriage is rooted in friendship.

During an episode of Oprah Winfrey's documentary series Oprah's Master Class, Crawford opened up about her marriage to Gerber and how their friendship set the foundation for a long-lasting relationship.

“Being rooted and based in friendship, it keeps the relationship elevated. There’s always a certain level of respect. We respect each other’s opinion about parenting and our personal life, but also for work stuff," she told the talk show host. "We really listen to each other. I would want that friendship in my life no matter what.”

May 2016: Cindy Crawford shares the sweetest thing Rande Gerber has ever done for her.

Out of all the romantic gestures Gerber has pulled off over the years, Crawford has a favorite. "When we were dating, he knew that I always wanted a piano. I told him, like one time I mentioned it. One Christmas morning, I woke up to like, it sounded like Christmas music on the radio or whatever. And I started going downstairs, and there was a piano with our friend playing Christmas carols on it, at like seven in the morning," she told InStyle. "He managed to get a piano in the house, and then someone in like, you must have let him in at like six in the morning. So that was very nice."

May 2023: Cindy Crawford celebrates her 25th wedding anniversary with Rande Gerber.

Cindy toasted to 25 years of marriage with a heartfelt tribute dedicated to Rande on Instagram. Back in May, Cindy shared a slideshow of throwback photos from their wedding along with a sweet message for her husband. "25 years ago today, Rande and I got married at the Ocean Club in the Bahamas," she began her caption. "It was a picture perfect wedding all captured by @arthurelgort. We spent a beautiful weekend surrounded by family and friends celebrating our love for each other. I would do it all over again in a second."

The model continued, "I want to congratulate 'us' on making it 25 years. We have been blessed in so many ways, especially our two children @presleygerber and @kaiagerber. I also want to acknowledge that even with all the blessings, life is full of ups and downs and challenges. I’m proud of how we have navigated life together — looking to each other for strength and comfort. You have been my best friend and rock and I can’t imagine a life without you."
