Cicada celebration to be held at Tuscola gallery

TUSCOLA, Ill. (WCIA) — The Vault Art Gallery in Tuscola is holding “CicadaPalooza,” a special exhibit this weekend to celebrate the start of the legendary cicada season.

This year will have an extra-large cicada season, as the Northern Illinois brood, which emerges every 17 years, and the southern brood which emerges every 13 years, are both coming up from underground. Scientists said this only happens every 221 years.

Events on Saturday will kick off with at 10 a.m. with a presentation by Katie Dana of the Illinois Natural History Survey. The gallery will also host an acoustic jam session from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Cicadas: When are they the loudest?

Other events scheduled include art activities like adding to and making musical tools to emulate the sounds of cicadas, a cicada parade, and the crowning of the cicada prince and princess. Light refreshments will be served.

The Vault Art Gallery is located at 100 N Main St. in Tuscola and is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Sunday.
