'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' Cast Then and Now

The 2005 fantasy blockbuster, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, took us on the adventure of a lifetime along with the beloved cast. The film series was based on the widely popular book series by C.S. Lewis, published between 1950 and 1956, before being adapted for the screen. The first screen adaptations came in 1967 for television, and again in 1979. In 1988, it was once again brought to television in the form of three BBC serials before it hit the big screen in the early 2000s.

What is The Chronicles of Narnia about?

In the midst of WWII, four siblings are sent to live with a man named Professor Kirke for their safety. It's in his home that the youngest child, Lucy, discovers an enormous wardrobe during a game of hide-and-seek. When she enters its doors, she is transported to a mystical place called Narnia, discovering talking animals and an eternal winter, thanks to a curse put in place by the evil White Witch. Returning with her siblings, they work alongside Aslan, a magical lion, to fight the menacing White Witch, in the hopes of putting an end to her evil once and for all.

The first film in the rebooted series premiered in 2005 and was preceded by two more: The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008) and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010).

It was recently revealed that famed director Greta Gerwig has taken on the newest Netflix Narnia adaptation. “I haven’t even really started wrapping my arms around it, but I’m properly scared of it, which feels like a good place to start,” she had said on the Total Film podcast. While details on the magnitude of the project are sparse, a 2018 press release has confirmed that "Under the terms of a multi-year deal between Netflix and The C.S. Lewis Company, Netflix will develop classic stories from across the Narnia universe into series and films for its members worldwide." We can't wait to see what's in store!

Georgie Henley as Lucy Pevensie in the Narnia cast

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was Georgie Henley's debut acting role as the youngest Pevensie sibling. Throughout the duration of her time acting in the Narnia series, she acted in two episodes of Jane Eyre on BBC, and after that, she continued to act in various projects such as Perfect Sisters (2014), The Sisterhood of Night (2014), and Access All Areas (2017). Her most recent roles were in The Spanish Princess, The Diplomat and Partygate (2023).

"I can genuinely say I’ve never been involved in project I don’t believe in," Henley told Talking Beasts: The Narnia Podcast in 2020 when asked which of her projects she's been the most proud of. "But in terms of being proud…I feel so lucky to have been Lucy. While we’ve all been in lockdown, the amount of people who have been messaging me about watching Narnia as a comfort movie, or an escape from all of this, it makes me feel so lucky to be that for people."

Skandar Keynes as Edmund Pevensie in the Narnia cast

Skandar Keynes played the role of Edmund Pevensie, the sibling who was famously willing to betray his family for a Turkish delight! After his role as Edmund, Keynes did not continue his acting career. He went on to continue his education and pursue a career working in politics.

William Moseley as Peter Pevensie in the Narnia cast

William Moseley played the role of Peter Pevensie in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe cast and since then, has continued to have a successful career on the screen. After Narnia, he could be seen in movies like Run (2013), The Silent Mountain (2014), Margarita With a Straw (2014) and more. In 2015, he took on the role of Prince Liam in The Royals.

With Netflix developing new adaptations of Narnia, Moseley told The Permanent Rain Podcast in 2021: “Netflix owns the rights to Narnia now, so they are in full control and whatever they want to do, they will do… I hope they make it, and I hope they do something powerful with it. Really go for it, you know. It’s a beautiful world to have reign over, so I’m looking forward to seeing what they do.”

Most recently, Moseley has broken out into the world of Hallmark romance with his starring role in Christmas in Notting Hill (2023).

Anna Popplewell as Susan Pevensie

Anna Popplewell played Susan Pevensie in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and also continued her acting career after the film series came to an end. Some of her movies included Brave New World (2011), Payback Season (2012) and Freak of Nurture (2015). From 2013 to 2016, she acted in the popular series Reign. Her most recent role was in The Nun II (2023).

James McAvoy as Mr. Tumnus

James McAvoy also went on to have a very successful career after his role as Mr. Tumnus in the first Narnia film. Films that followed were Penelope (2006), Atonement (2007), as well his role as younger Charles Xavier/Professor X in the X-Men film series.

His 2016 role in Split also showed off a different side of his skill set, and he's continued to succeed in movies like Atomic Blonde (2017), It Chapter Two (2019) and most recently, The Book of Clarence (2023).

McAvoy talked about his role in the film in a 2022 interview with British GQ: "They were looking at much older actors, not much older, but like thirties and forties. And they were like, 'this just seems wrong, it seems really creepy.' They knew they had to get someone who was young, and was nice, seemed unthreatening, and I’m all those things clearly," he joked.

Tilda Swinton as The White Witch

Tilda Swinton was another actress who continued her already successful career post-Narnia. Some of her notable roles that came after the series include We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011), Snowpiercer (2013), Suspiria (2018) and more. Her more recent film credits include The Killer (2023), Asteroid City (2023) and Problemista (2023).

Kiran Shah as Ginarrbrik

Kiran Shah played Ginarrbrik, an accomplice to the White Witch in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe cast. After his role in the film, he went on to act in movies like The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and various Star Wars films over the years. His most recent film credit was in There's Something in the Barn (2023).

Liam Neeson as Aslan

Prior to his voice-over role in the film, Liam Neeson had already experienced great success as an actor on the screen, and since his role as Aslan came to its conclusion, he has continued to take on stellar roles across various genres.

Notable parts were in movies such as Taken (2008), The Grey (2011), Battleship (2012), The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and more. His most recent movies have been In the Land of Saints and Sinners (2023), Wildcat (2023) and Retribution (2023).

Jim Broadbent as Professor Kirke

After his role as Professor Kirke in Narnia, Jim Broadbent could be seen in movies like Hot Fuzz (2007), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009), The Iron Lady (2011), and Cloud Atlas (2012). His most recent work was in an episode of My Lady Jane and The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry (2023).
