Actor Christopher Meloni knew what he wanted in a certain television relationship.

As Elliot Stabler on NBC’s Law & Order: SVU, he was paired — platonically— w ith Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson for 12 years. Christopher knew the two should never become involved romantically, no matter what the fans wanted. The pair “needed to keep that line taut but very clear,” Christopher told The Hollywood Reporter in 2016. “Keep the tension—never cross it.”

Christopher, 57, also knew what he wanted in his personal life, as well.

He met his wife, Doris Sherman Williams, 58, in 1989 when the production designer rode her motorcycle to the set of the television series Christopher was working on. Her short, bleached blonde hair and retro sunglasses made an impression on him, who told Your Tango that he immediately thought, “This I gotta meet.”

So, Christopher and Sherman (her preferred name), met and flirted, and she later invited him to a party, although she had a boyfriend at the time. More time passed, and when they met again, Christopher was involved with someone. The duo didn’t actually become a couple for another two years, and married four years later in a medieval-themed wedding ceremony on the beach in Malibu.

The busy actor and production designer soon found themselves torn between Sherman’s preference for Los Angeles and Christopher's for New York. Sherman finally agreed to set up house in the Big Apple, where they are now raising their two children, Sophia Eva Pietra Meloni, 20, and Dante Amadeo Meloni, 17.

What Christopher's fans may not know is that Sherman has created a home for their family worthy of Architectural Digest, which featured their “modern but comfortable” apartment in 2017. It’s clearly a haven for Christopher and his family.

“When I’m done working and come home, I can really get away, be in a cocoon. I never imagined living 60 stories above the city could be so soothing,” he told the magazine.

Christopher and Sherman will be married 26 years this year, which is quite the feat by Hollywood standards. Their long-term domestic harmony comes from “Space, respect, trust, and freedom,” Sherman told Your Tango. It certainly helps, she added, that, “we just like each other.”
