Christopher John Rogers Pares Back His Usual Design Staples for a Construction-Focused Pre-Fall 2024

Christopher John Rogers took a surprise visit to Paris this week to unexpectedly reveal his Pre-Fall 2024 collection, slyly titled "You're Gonna Like the Way You Look, I Guarantee It."

Also dubbed Collection 13 based on the designer's in-house numbering system, these latest garments focus heavily on form and construction. Though vivacious colors and signature stripes are hallmarks of a Christopher John Rogers design, these items dare to explore other territories: The first nine looks, all monochromatic between cream and tan, toy with bubble hems, careful tucking, tailoring and bustier bodices. Silhouettes vary, but maintain a powerful elegance. Materials range from Japanese nylon (also used in backpacking for hikers, per Vogue), Italian lurex jacquard, silk taffeta and cotton poplin.

"I think it surprises people, and I like the cleanness of it," Rogers told Vogue of his choice to open with white looks, versus his typical chroma salads.

Still, Rogers brought back classic motifs, flaunting his knack for color combination via a motley of "cassette stripes" in grass green, deep brown, soft yellow and baby pink. Layered ruffles on a peplum blouse each took on their own shade of flamingo. Prints of circles debuted alongside imagery of a red rose. By the final look, he reverted to monochrome, in an ebony gown, putting the spotlight back on "make and process — that's what I love most about what I do," he said.

Rogers keenly balanced his blend of construction-focused looks with the punches of color for which his customers know and love him. Despite the drama or simplicity of each look, it's all very wearable.
