Christine Baranski is redefining what it means to celebrate your birthday in style. The beloved actress turned 70 today, and marked the occasion by walking the carpet at the 2022 Met Gala.

Baranski currently stars in HBO's The Gilded Age, so surely had a particular affinity for this year's dress code, which is "gilded glamour, white tie." She wore a custom Thom Browne suit and bold shades, for what is (surprisingly) her first ever appearance at the Met Gala.

Speaking with Town & Country earlier this year, Baranski reflected on why she's so adept at playing sophisticated, wealthy grand dames, like The Gilded Age's Agnes. “It’s funny because I'm from this blue-collar neighborhood in Buffalo," she said. "I don't know how it happened, but I always wanted to play queens or ladies rather than victims. I was never good at playing victims. I was always better at playing the character of the woman who was more in command of her life.”

Tonight's event marks the Met Gala's triumphant return to its traditional early May time slot, after two years of COVID cancelations and delays. It's actually the second in a two-part event celebrating a Costume Institute exhibition—last year's Met Gala, belatedly held in September, had the theme In America: A Lexicon of Fashion. Tonight's theme is In America: An Anthology of Fashion, and encourages attendees to honor "the tenets of American style, and celebrates unsung heroes of US design."
