Yellowjackets star Christina Ricci has spoken out about "awesome guys" who turn out to be "abusers" following Danny Masterson's sentencing.

In a statement on her Instagram stories (via Deadline), the actress urged her followers to support abuse victims, adding that it can be "tough to accept, but we have to".

"So sometimes people we have loved and admired do horrible things. They might not do these things to us and we only know who they were to us, but that doesn't mean they didn’t do the horrible things," she wrote.

"People we know as 'awesome guys' can be predators and abusers. It's tough to accept, but we have to."

She continued: "If we say we support victims – women, children, men, boys – then we must be able to take this stance.

"Unfortunately, I've known lots of 'awesome guys' who were lovely to me who have been proven to be abusers privately. I've also had personal experience with this. Believe victims. It's not easy to come forward. It's not easy to get a conviction."

While Ricci did not refer to any particular individual in her statement, her words come amid That ‘70s Show star Masterson being jailed for 30 years.

Back in May, the actor was found guilty of raping two women, with the offences having taken place between 2001 and 2003.

Following the sentencing, Masterson's co-stars Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis have been criticised after it was revealed the pair had written character statements on behalf of the actor.

The couple have since released a public statement apologising for any "pain" caused by their letters.
