Christina Aguilera Reflects on Famous Feuds With Pink and Britney Spears

'It was so inappropriate sometimes, the things that were asked about that era.'

Christina Aguilera looked back on her feuds with fellow pop stars Britney Spears and Pink with fresh eyes and now blames them on politics within the industry and not a result of any one singer's actions.

During Wednesday's episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, Aguilera described being pitted against her colleagues in the early 2000s. "It just felt like just punches in the face," she admitted. "It was hard to just constantly feel like you're making music and doing something you love and then someone spinning something so negative about it."

She added, "It was really hard because sometimes who you were pitted against, you actually genuinely, you know, loved and respected."

Rumors that Pink and the "Genie in a Bottle" singer were at odds began flying in 2001, shortly after they recorded their vocals for Patti LaBelle and Moulin Rouge!'s "Lady Marmalade" separately. The "tension" was so thick that eight years later, it was still brought up in interviews and the two stars didn't "make amends" until season 10 of NBC's The Voice in 2016.

Aguilera, who knew Spears since they were child stars on The Mickey Mouse Club in the early '90s, suffered a falling out with the "Baby One More Time" songstress after she split from Justin Timberlake in 2002 and Aguilera toured with him a few months later.

"There was a lot of double standards with it," she said of the tour. "Because I went on tour with Justin, we did the Stripped [&] Justified tour and there were things where I was just like, ‘Why is it okay for him and not okay for me, you know what I mean?'," she explained during the Apr. 5 podcast.

"It’s just like I was constantly pushing back in my way. I mean, it was so inappropriate sometimes, the things that were asked about that era," she said.

"[The industry at the time] was a different business where there was a lot of female comparisons and double standards with women," she continued.

"You're too much of a kid to understand what's happening," Aguilera joked, "I hated that s--t."

However, the entertainment industry–though still very competitive–seems to have become a little more welcoming of its talent, both new and established.

"I'm just so excited to see more women supporting women because now you're cutting through the middle man a lot more," she added. "Which is really, really nice."
