Christian Siriano’s NYFW 2020 Show Was Inspired by Harley Quinn

Christian Siriano’s designs have never been limited to one style, theme, gender or body type — and his Fall 2020 Ready to Wear collection, presented via a Harley Quinn-inspired show, was further proof of that.

Sponsored by the new film Birds of Prey, Siriano’s runway show at New York Fashion Week, which took place on February 6, kicked off with dark, goth-inspired looks of black and leather. The looks slowly transformed as the show went on, culminating with Siriano’s more well-known evening looks.

With each passing look, the collection’s flow relied heavily on Hollywood’s interpretation of Harley Quinn at the beginning but ended with Siriano’s own glamorous, eveningwear interpretation. And that, of course, is not a simple theme to tackle but Siriano has the range for it.

The mood of the evening was set by the Birds of Prey soundtrack, set pieces from the film and pink lighting to fit Harley’s aesthetic. Every look in the collection was, of course, perfectly tailored and fitted — though a few looks in the transitionary period between the Harley Quinn-segment and eveningwear felt out of place, especially for a rather long show. However, it’s those middle looks that will certainly appeal to everyday consumers, fitting the ready-to-wear mantra of the evening.

In the collection, Siriano let many of the impeccable designs speak for themselves by keeping the styling minimal. For hair, most of the models wore slicked ponytails — for reference, just as snatched as Ariana Grande’s — with pink and blue extensions. For makeup, they sported colorful lips with a Harley Quinn-inspired heart under their eyes. Accessories were minimal with a few bags accompanying some of the ready-to-wear looks and chokers doing the same on some of the more grunge-inspired ensembles.

The highlight of the show, however, came at the end when supermodel Coco Rocha debuted Siriano’s final look: An evening gown with so much structure and drama that it even had actress Leslie Jones hollering. Coco also had the rest of the audience cheering when she opened the show, as did model Candice Huffine (who has long served as one of Christian’s leading curvy women on the runway) alongside others like Marquita Pring, Precious Lee, and Chloe Vero.

In an interview with Fashionista, Siriano explained that he wanted the evening to feel like "a really cool, dark, old funhouse,” and that was certainly accomplished. While a few looks in the middle fell flat, the juxtaposition between the Harley Quinn-aesthetic and Siriano’s classic eveningwear was a match I was certainly not expecting but one I couldn't have been more thrilled to witness in person.

Each season, Siriano leaves his mark during fashion week — not being afraid to push the limits and take risks, and this collection was no different. His eccentricity is what sets him apart in the industry, and what makes his shows such a spectacle and honor to attend.
