Christian Louboutin Adds Lip Liner to Beauty Collection

When Christian Louboutin’s beauty collection launched in 2013, the famed shoe designer told WWD that the line would be “very constructed, quite different and unexpected,” and he’s certainly kept his promise. The first products he released were a line of $50 nail polishes, since his iconic red soles originated when he painted the bottoms of his first shoes with red nail polish. The bottles feature four-inch long caps that resemble stiletto heels, and the container is shaped like a cut gem. Last year he added an under-nail polish pen to the collection, reminiscent of Adele’s 2012 red carpet look when she painted the undersides of her nails red, and the top side shimmery blue to match her crystal-studded Louboutin shoes. In August 2015, he created a line of 36 lipstick shades ($90) inspired by Queen Nefertiti, which were strung onto necklaces and feature crown shapes. The packaging for just-released lip liner ($40), or lip definer as Louboutin prefers, spared no flashy elements. It drew from features of the previous products — the handle is a spike and the cap features a crown that sharpens the retractable tip as you close it, as well as a loop to string it on your lipstick necklace.

The practicality of the product has little to do with packaging, unsurprisingly —although we do love the self-sharpening feature. Louboutin’s definition of nude isn’t limited to one beige shade. All of the five liner shades are a different version of nude like his nude shoe collection released in 2013. The lip liner shades are the same as the five shoe shades Louboutin created. And we can look forward to two more shoe shades in 2016. “There are two colors that I’m missing the range of in the middle,” he told New York Magazine. “In the next year, we will be at seven total skin tones.” The liner shades include Leanue (cool, pale blushed beige), Nats (warm, pinkish beige), Maya (luminous tan), Safki (cocoa with notes of red), and Ada (deep, chocolate brown).

The variety of shades make it easy to pick your perfect everyday color. “Use your natural lip color as a guide for finding your go-to nude shade of lip color,” says Yahoo Beauty Editor in Chief Bobbi Brown. “It should enhance your natural lip color without looking to obvious. The most flattering shade will either match or be slightly darker than your lips.” Brown recommends biting your lips and trying to match that color. While the packaging may be pretty over the top (and may not make it through airport security), the shades are totally wearable.
