Following the huge success of Avengers: Endgame in 2019, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to return with a number of movies comic book fans can hardly wait for. And now, one of them may have just got a whole lot more exciting.

Recently, Collider reported that Batman star Christian Bale was in talks to join returning players Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Tessa Thompson in Thor: Love and Thunder. Now, Thompson has confirmed the news.

Speaking to ET at the premiere of Westworld, Thomson said: "Christian Bale is going to play our villain, which is going to be fantastic".

Teasing what we can expect from the movie, she added: "I've read the script [but] I can't tell you much. [There's been] lots of exciting text messages exchanged between Natalie and I – we're going to have fun. Taika [Waititi] is writing and directing. [There's] some familiar faces [and] some new people coming into the mix."

Hemsworth is back as the titular Norse hero, Thompson will once again play Thor: Ragnarok's Valkyrie and Portman's Jane Foster is set to wield Thor's hammer Mjolnir.

As for the exact nature of Bale's villain, we'll have to wait to find out. However, that hasn't stopped fans speculating on Gorr the God Butcher or Dario Agger. Before the latest casting news, fans on social media had suggested that he could be brought on board to bring alien warrior Beta Ray Bill to life or Balder the Brave.

Either way, we're set to find out soon. At last night's Golden Globes, Waititi told Variety that the eagerly-anticipated sequel is set to start filming in Sydney, Australia in August.

Bale is, of course, no stranger to superhero movies, having played Bruce Wayne, aka the Caped Crusader, in all three installments of Christopher Nolan's genre-defining Dark Knight trilogy.

He most recently appeared as real-life racing driver Ken Miles opposite Matt Damon in the critically-acclaimed drama Ford v Ferrari.

Thor: Love and Thunder has a release date of November 5, 2021.
