Chrissy Teigen Loses Baby, Shares the 'Kind pf Deep Pain You Only Hear About'

On Wednesday night, Chrissy Teigen shared the devastating news that she has lost her baby. So many of us are mourning too, as if we know her, after following the story of her surprise pregnancy and its complications for months. Pregnancy loss is a tragedy no one should have to experience, but in sharing so much of it so immediately, Teigen has no doubt helped countless other families who have suffered or will suffer miscarriage or stillbirth.

“We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before,” Teigen wrote on Instagram and Twitter, sharing two black-and-white photographs of herself in the hospital, one in which she is holding the baby. “We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough.”

Teigen had been in the hospital since Monday due to excessive bleeding. On Tuesday, she revealed that she had received blood transfusions, and on Wednesday, she wrote about the blood clot she had, causing a scramble to feel the baby’s heartbeat. The model and cookbook author had been on bed rest since early September due to a “weak placenta.”

“We never decide on our babies’ names until the last possible moment after they’re born, just before we leave the hospital,” Teigen continued. “But we, for some reason, had started to call this little guy in my belly Jack. So he will always be Jack to us. Jack worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be, forever.”

This detail really makes us feel for Teigen, husband John Legend, and their two other children, Luna and Miles. The couple had revealed her pregnancy in mid-August via Legend’s video for his new single “Wild.” From that moment, Teigen’s avid followers have been rewarded with frequent updates about the baby, whom she accidentally revealed to be a boy, and about how Luna and Miles were preparing for him. Now, she is faced with breaking this news to them.

“To our Jack – I’m so sorry that the first few moments of your life were met with so many complications, that we couldn’t give you the home you needed to survive. We will always love you,” she wrote, making it seem as if she blames herself for this loss, which is understandable, but also not true.

On Twitter, she shared one more wrecking message for the public: “Driving home from the hospital with no baby. How can this be real.”

According to the March of Dimes, about 10 to 15 pregnancies out of 100 (of people who know they are pregnant) end in miscarriage, which is loss before the 20th week. The statistics for stillbirth (after 20 weeks of pregnancy) is 1 in 100. We don’t know exactly how far along Teigen was, though she had said she was “halfway.”

Miscarriage and stillbirth used to be something parents suffered in silence, as if their loss didn’t count. We’re grateful to brave celebrities like Teigen for sharing her experiences, helping to normalize this grief for others.

These other famous parents have been open about suffering miscarriages.
