Chrissy Teigen and John Legend Just Donated to Time's Up for an Incredibly Powerful Reason

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend made a $200,000 donation to the Time's Up initiative for an incredibly powerful reason.

Time's Up has been making near-constant headlines ever since it launched on January 1. The initiative, kicked off by 300 powerful Hollywood women, established a legal fund with the goal of ending the gendered power imbalance in all industries. More than $19.3 million has been raised through the GoFundMe site alone—but there's a recent contribution that's not only financially generous, but incredibly powerful.

It comes from power couple John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, who donated $200,000 to the Time's Up initiative on Saturday. The GoFundMe page lists their contribution as an offline one, but the attribution reads that the donation comes from "Chrissy Teigen and John Legend on behalf of the heroic gymnasts of the USA Gymnastics Team."

The USA Gymnastics gymnasts Teigen and Legend are referring to, of course, reached hero status after their contributions to sexual abuser Larry Nassar's sentencing hearings this month. Nassar's accusers—many of them members of the USA Gymnastics, plus other gymnasts and athletes—took to the stand to offer emotional impact statements, often detailing their abuse at the hands of the former team doctor. Olympian McKayla Maroney had previously settled a lawsuit against USA Gymnastics for $1.25 million in 2016 that resulted in her being unable to publicly discuss Nassar. Initially, she was facing a $100,000 fine for breaking her non-disclosure agreement if she spoke in court (though her testimony was ultimately allowed). But Teigen offered to pay her fine in mid-January.

"The entire principle of this should be fought - an NDA to stay quiet about this serial monster with over 140 accusers, but I would be absolutely honored to pay this fine for you, McKayla," she tweeted.

Teigen has a track record of grand philanthropic gestures—for example, there was the time she paid for a woman's aesthetician school tuition, and that 516-percent tip left on an Outback Steakhouse bill. It's clear that her and Legend's Time's Up donation is one more gift that will have lasting—and meaningful—impact on women's lives.
