Chrissy Teigen & John Legend’s Baby Wren Was Honored with a Special Title — & People Are Big Mad About It

Think of the cutest baby you know. My first thought is my baby (of course), and then that adorable baby smiling at me at Target the other day, and have you seen Joey Lawrence’s cute daughter? OK, so all babies are cute in their own way, but for some reason PEOPLE decided to name one baby the cutest in all the land — and yeah, people were not happy about it.

Yesterday, PEOPLE announced that Chrissy Teigen and John Legend’s baby Wren, 5 months, is “PEOPLE’s 2023 Cutest Baby.” They shared a video compilation of the infant (and his amazing hair!), and at first, it seems like the sweetest honor. But people pointed out that a baby cuteness competition as a whole seems a little weird, especially in a family with two babies.

“Their 3rd child, born a few months before, must feel swell about this 😂,” one person commented, referring to Legend and Teigen’s daughter Esti, 10 months. Teigen gave birth to Esti just 6 months before she welcomed Wren via surrogate, so it’s a little weird to pick just one baby as the cutest. Would they do that for a pair of twin babies? It’s just awkward and a little sad for the baby not chosen.

“They have two babies almost the same age, and you chose just one of them? Probably would have been better to pick from another family 🤷‍♀️,” another said.

Others felt like the contest in general was uncalled for. “How awful to name one baby 2023’s cutest baby. All babies. Are cute and precious,” one person commented.

“What a weird-ass contest to have. Lol,” someone else wrote. Another said, “Nope. All babies are cute. Horrible post 👎🏻.”

“No offence but my baby is 2023s cutest baby 😊,” another person commented.

There’s another weird thing about PEOPLE’s Cutest Baby awards — they seem to go to only boys? In an article accompanying the announcement, PEOPLE wrote that Ren “follows in the footsteps of previous titleholders like Lauren Conrad’s son Liam, DJ Khaled’s son Asahd, Michael Phelps’ son Boomer, Anderson Cooper’s son Wyatt, and Andy Cohen’s son Benjamin.”  I guess girls just aren’t cute enough to win the award? You gotta start that misogyny young!

Teigen and Legend, who also share Luna, 7, and Miles, 5, haven’t commented on their youngest child’s new recognition. It’s exciting for sure, but maybe there could have been a different way to praise cute babies that doesn’t make others feel left out or bad about themselves.
