Chrissy Teigen and diet culture are breaking up for good. It’s taken years, but after having so many “ups and downs” with it, the Cravings author has decided that life’s too short to give up the food she loves.

“I’ve thrown all of that out of the window,” she told People in the publication’s 2021 Beautiful Issue. “I think now at this point in my life it’s more important for me to enjoy things as they come.”

In other words, she’s prioritizing what makes her happy, rather than the number on a scale. “I eat things when I want them. Because if I don’t my mind personally goes crazy,” she said. “I kind of put my mind over body a little bit, mind and spirit over body. If it’s going to make me happy and make me feel good, then I indulge in it.”

Her complicated relationship with food and her body began when she started modeling at 18. In August 2020, she told Glamour UK that the measurements and weigh-ins were constant. “I’ve lived a whole life. I’ve spent way too many years counting calories, scheduling way too many workouts and trying to figure out what my term for wellness was for myself,” she told People. “I’ve been trying to figure that out for so so long.”

She simply wants to spend her energy on other things. “I do look at [my body] in the shower and think, ‘Arghhh, these kids’. But I don’t take the aesthetics so seriously now. It’s very fulfilling not having that pressure of putting on a swimsuit and looking good for a magazine while running around on a beach,” she told Glamour. “I don’t feel like my body is where I’m going to be sh*tty to myself, either. I’m already thinking enough things I am mad at myself about, I can’t add my body into it.”

That care-free mentality was likely exacerbated by the sudden loss of her third son, Jack in November 2020. It shook the mom of three to her core and kind of put things into perspective.

“Now I know that [wellness for me is] on the ground playing with my kids, getting out there, going to a park, going to an aquarium, being able to drive around with my kids in the car,” she told People. “That is activity for me and I enjoy doing things like that.”

This shift for Teigen seems to fall in line with an ongoing effort to cut toxicity out of her life. In May 2020, she got surgery to remove her breast implants because she was “just over it” and in March, she deleted her Twitter—despite having 13.7 million followers—because it “no longer serve[d] her positively.”

We have nothing but respect for those decisions. You do you, Chrissy!
