Chris Hemsworth Is No Hero for Dodging His Homeschooling Duties

If you could have your choice of Avenger with whom to raise your kids in quarantine, which would you pick? If there’s a lot of homeschooling involved, you’d probably be better of with Bruce Banner than Thor. We’re not just going by stereotype here, but by Chris Hemsworth’s own confession on Wednesday night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Hemsworth and wife Elsa Pataky have been sheltering at their beach home in Australia, where the actor said things have been relatively calm. But when Kimmel asked whether his kids India (7), Sasha (6), and Tristan (6) have been learning much over the computer, he sounded a lot like the rest of us.

“Over the computer, meaning they’re watching YouTube and stuff,” Hemsworth said. “I’m trying. I’m failing miserably. Instead of four or five hours of negotiation and bribery and then maybe 20 minutes of actual work, if that. …”
Hemsworth said the new ways of teaching math have really stumped him.
“There’s all these new little tricks and so on, which I don’t understand, so good luck me teaching my kids,” he admitted. “I’m just relaxed in the idea that they’re going come out of this quarantine IQ a little under par, a little behind.”
That’s an attitude many of us have begun to adopt in the face of so much online schoolwork. School districts and teachers have been just as stumped as parents are when it comes to figuring out what the new standards should be for kids learning from home. Maybe Hemsworth and Pataky would have an easier time if they realized their kids would be just fine with an hour of homeschooling a day, according to experts.
If you’re still thinking it would be nice to be in Pataky’s shoes, sheltering in place with a Hemsworth of your very own, this last admission might change your mind:
“I got this, kind of, ride-on mower a few months back, and there’s something quite therapeutic about it,” he told Kimmel of his new hobby. “And it may be just a few hours of escape from having to entertain three kids 24/7, you know? Or teach kids. It’s usually around school time that the lawns need to be mowed conveniently. ‘Honey, that lawn’s growing. It’s a jungle out there. I gotta get to it, sorry.’ ”
When the Hemsworth family really needs a break from homeschool, they can watch one of these family-friendly movies together.
