Chris Hemsworth: “Hollywood Is Set Up To Turn You Into A Complete Narcissist”

It goes without saying that 32-year-old star Chris Hemsworth is one of the most gorgeous men in the world. A recent Vanity Fair article assures this is no mirage (he looks that good in real life, too), but despite his killer looks, Hemsworth’s ego remains completely in check. This is a small miracle, considering Hemsworth, who was People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2014, is part of an industry that’s “set up to turn you into a complete narcissist,” as he told Vanity Fair in their December issue. “You just kind of lose touch with reality a bit [in LA]. You drive down the street and you’re constantly reminded of everything you’re either involved in or not involved in. It’s exhausting.” He isn’t letting it get to him, though. Instead, he and his family packed up and moved as far from Hollywood as they could get: Byron Bay, a beach town 15 hours from California on the east coast of his native Australia.
Still, Hemsworth’s looks are hard to ignore, and he knows it. When he hosted Saturday Night Live this March, he sarcastically introduced himself with a typical story about his struggles to find success in Hollywood, complete with a faux-humble bragging voice. “When I got to Hollywood, they said I’d never make it as an actor—they said I was too tall, too blonde, my muscles were too big…” he reminisced ironically.
After a three-hour conversation for his Vanity Fair cover shoot, Hemsworth’s interviewer was more taken aback by his humble reservation than his undeniable good looks. “In person, Hemsworth is sunny, laid-back, polite, without pretense,” she wrote. “Hemsworth’s a model of decency and modesty and good humor in a context in which those virtues barely stand a chance.” This guy is the entire package.
